Up until my Yorkshire terrier, Mrs. Beasley, came to live with me, my pet of choice was a cat. Over the years I have had two cats that I adored. Unfortunately, my husband was not a fan of the feline. He tolerated them because I loved them. I like cats because they love to cuddle and sit on your lap.
My oldest cat died a few years ago and I was devastated. We also have had dogs as pets, but most had been of the large breed variety. Our black lab, Belle, died when she was ten year old. It happened quite suddenly, and we were surprised because she had never been sick in her life. To make a long story short, we just couldn’t bear to have anymore pets for quite a few years. You become so attached to your pets that it’s like losing a member of the family when they die.
A couple of years ago I decided that it was time for a new pet. My husband said, “No cats”. I didn’t want a big dog because we like to travel, so I decided the perfect compromise was a small dog. My cats had always been very loving and liked to sit with me. I wanted a small dog that would be a lap dog. My husband and I decided on the Yorkie.
Yorkies make perfect lap dogs. On average they will weigh anywhere from around four to ten pounds. Bea is one of the larger Yorkies, and weighs in about ten pounds. She has a wonderful temperament and we couldn’t ask for a sweeter dog. Another reason why they’re one of the best lap dogs is because they don’t shed. Unlike my cats who left cat hair everywhere.
Large breed dogs are sweet and cuddly as puppies, but you don’t want to encourage them to be lap dogs. You will certainly regret it when they get bigger, and they think it’s quite alright to try to climb into your lap. We made that mistake with our lab. She was so cute when she was little that we held her a lot. So I would say that large breed dogs, definitely, do not make the best lap dogs. It’s pretty tough when they try to climb on your lap, and are looking you in the eye while they’re doing it.
Bea is very soft and cuddly and enjoys being close to her people family. I really believe that Bea doesn’t realize she’s a dog. She goes everywhere with us and is calm, sweet, and friendly. She’s seems to be quite fair in the attention she pays to both myself and my husband. She goes from lap to lap without showing too much favoritism.
I really think she likes my husband best. She likes him best because she can boss him around, and he does anything she wants on demand. She has him very well trained. In my opinion, Yorkies, make the best lap dogs.
