WWE’s annual SummerSlam event will air on Sunday, August 15th on Pay Per View from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
The following are the matches and my predictions for the winners:
World Champion Kane v. Rey Mysterio (title match)
Prediction: Rey Mysterio
Why: The issues with Kane and Rey Mysterio began back over the Memorial Day weekend when Kane found his brother, the Undertaker, in a vegetative state and Kane vowed to find the guilty party and be judge, jury, and executioner. He went through every superstar on the SmackDown roster to find the guilty party accusing CM Punk and the Straight Edge Society, then Jack Swagger, and then finally Rey Mysterio. (Kane said that the Undertake briefly woke from his hospital bed and said it was Mysterio who attacked him.)
At the same time, Rey Mysterio was still dealing with Jack Swagger’s anger at losing his championship at Fatal 4 Way. Swagger went on a tear putting ankle locks on both Big Show and Rey Mysterio. Rey Mysterio was the victim of this ankle lock on more than one occasion.
The Undertaker was supposed to have a spot at Fatal 4 Way, but was then found in the vegetative state. He won that spot the week before by beating Rey Mysterio. To fill the empty spot, Teddy Long held a Battle Royal and Rey Mysterio beat Kane to take the final spot in the Fatal 4 Way where Mysterio went on to win the World Championship and setting off Swagger’s anger.
Despite rematches and an injury to his ankle, Rey Mysterio was able to retain his title against Jack Swagger at the Money In the Bank event only to have Kane cash in the Money In the Bank contract he won for SmackDown earlier in the program.
This led to a number one contender’s match between Swagger and Mysterio and Mysterio won again, which gave him this match at SummerSlam. But Rey Mysterio said he knew took out the Undertaker — it was Kane. So we will see what happens but I know that Rey Mysterio can beat Kane and hopefully we will get some answers soon about the fate of the Undertaker.
WWE Champion Sheamus v. Randy Orton (title match)
Prediction: Randy Orton, but it may not matter
Why: Despite the size of Sheamus and his famous boot to the face, it is clear that he is afraid of Randy Orton. We saw the fear on his face this past Monday on Raw when he and Orton had a confrontation. I think it may take more than one RKO, but Orton can do it. The other thing to consider in this match is the fact that United States Champion The Miz still has yet to cash in his Money In the Bank contract.
Team WWE (John Cena, Bret Hart, John Morrison, R-Truth, Edge, Chris Jericho, and The Great Khali) v. The Nexus (tag team elimination match)
Prediction: Team WWE by a slight margin
Why: We know that this match is all about the numbers game. We know that the Nexus is very good at sticking together and attacking people like a pack of wild dogs. We also saw them beat a Raw superstar team in a similar match two weeks ago. Does that mean Team WWE doesn’t have a chance? Not necessarily. Team WWE started to fall apart and Edge and Chris Jericho had quit. This past week, The Great Khali said he was definitely still on Team WWE but the Nexus started to take out anyone who might replace Edge and Jericho. The took out The Hart Dynasty, Mark Henry, and The Great Khali. At that point, it looked like Team WWE would even need help from The Miz.
By the end of the show, Team WWE was back in tact and ready to take on the Nexus. The key to their win will be getting the upper hand early on the Nexus and getting them eliminated. Once they do that, I believe they are certain to win, but it could be close with Wade Barrett pulling the strings of the Nexus and only if Jericho and Edge can maintain their pledge to fight the Nexus.
Divas Champion Alicia Fox v. Melina (title match)
Why: For those of you who remember, Melina vacated the Divas Championship title back in January when she had to take time off for a knee injury. Maryse had the title and then Eve was able to win the title. However, Alicia Fox won the title at Fatal 4 Way. Eve had a couple of opportunities to win back her title but was unable to do so. However, on Raw two weeks ago, when Alicia Fox proclaimed that there was no diva on the roster who could beat her, out comes Melina to show her a thing or two. This past week, Melina beat Alicia Fox and the Raw GM decided that Alicia Fox will defend her title at SummerSlam. My bet is on Melina.
Big Show v. The Straight Edge Society (Luke Gallows, CM Punk, and Joey Mercury)
Prediction: Big Show
Why: Despite the SES’ attempt to take out the Big Show by injuring the tendons on his right hand a couple of weeks ago as revenge for humiliating them by tearing off the masks of both CM Punk and Joey Mercury, I believe that the Big Show will find a way to beat the SES — even if he has to use his other hand. He needs to be careful that they don’t take out his knee or ankle, but the Big Show can do it.
