Broadcasting live from Baltimore’s 1st Mariner Arena, the WWE superstars converged on Charm City for the annual Extreme Rules match. There were a number of high-profile matches scheduled for the event. Here’s what went down:
Triple H vs. Sheamus (Street Fight)
How: The only way to win this fight is through pinfall or submission. Other than that, there were no rules. That includes Sheamus and Triple H fighting backstage before even getting to the ring. Sheamus thought it would be a good time to bring out his steel pipe and beat Triple H. This fight is on hold for now.
Since the first match is on hold, ShowMiz takes the opportunity to get more camera time. The Miz is stil waiting for Bret Hart to say that ShowMiz is the greatest tag team in WWE history. That announcement is to come on tomorrow night’s episode of Raw. Now enters SmackDown’s general manager Teddy Long. Long decides to put ShowMiz up against three teams. If one of the teams beats ShowMiz, then they must defend their title against the same team on Raw tomorrow night.
Their first opponent? R-Truth and John Morrison.
Unified Tag Team Champions The Miz and Big Show vs. R-Truth and John Morrison
How: R-Truth and John Morrison were disqualified because John Morrison had Big Show in a submission hold on the top rope and didn’t break the hold by the referee’s 5-count.
Unified Tag Team Champions The Miz and Big Show vs. MVP and Mark Henry
Unified Tag Team Champions The Miz and Big Show vs. The Hart Dynasty
Winner: The Hart Dynasty
How: Pinfall. This means that The Hart Dynasty gets a chance for the Unified Tag Team title tomorrow night on Raw.
After these matches there was still no word on the condition of Triple H and whether or not he can fight.
CM Punk vs. Rey Mysterio
Winner: CM Punk and he gets to keep his hair.
How: Despite having the Straight Edge Society of Serena and Luke Gallows kicked out of the arena by the referee, Punk still managed to win and his hair lives to see another day. Luckily Rey Mysterio already shaved some off on Raw this past Monday night when the Straight Edge Society tried to shave the head of Triple H.
Shad Gaspard vs. JTG (Strap Match)
Update on Triple H’s condition says that he suffered nerve damage in his neck and left arm and is unlikely to be able to fight tonight.
World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger vs. Randy Orton (Extreme Rules for the Championship)
Winner: Jack Swagger by pinfall
How: Depsite suffering an RKO into a folding chair, Jack Swagger was still able to rally with a Gut Wrench Power Bomb and pin Randy Orton. There will be fallout from this — an RKO outside the ring from Randy Orton after the match. We’ll see what all of this means in terms of tomorrow night’s draft.
Sheamus now proclaims that Triple H made a mistake by showing up for tonight’s match, pipe in hand. Although he should not be fighting, Triple H decides to show up anyway.
Triple H vs. Sheamus (Street Fight) Part 2
Winner: Sheamus by pinfall
How: An injured Triple H put up a valiant effort in his match against Sheamus. But with Triple H unable to use his left arm and do a Pedigree, it was harder to beat Sheamus. After three boots to the skull, Sheamus was finally able to pin Triple H. At this point, Triple H refused to be carried out on a stretcher and decided to walk out with the help of referees and trainers only to have Sheamus come back out and kick Triple H in the head. Triple H was carried out by the medical team on a stretcher.
Women’s Champion Michelle McCool vs. Beth Phoenix (Extreme Makeover Championship Match)
Winner: Beth Phoenix by pinfall
How: There were a variety of objects available for use in the match: ironing board, mop and bucket, broom, make up, an iron and hairspray. But the best thing for Michelle McCool was having Layla and Vickie Guerrero ringside. Michelle made good use of the ironing board and hairspray to the eyes of Beth Phoenix. Beth Phoenix was able to finish off Michelle McCool with the Glass Slam and a pin for the win.
Edge vs. Chris Jericho (Steel Cage Match)
Winner: Edge by pinfall
How: This match can only be won by pinfall, submission, or escape from the cage. Coming into the match Edge is still limping from damage done to his achilles tendon from the matches over the past two weeks and an attack on the tendon 9 days ago by Chris Jericho. Chris Jericho looks like his ribs have healed from being speared after their match from WrestleMania 26 last month. Chris Jericho was hesitant to get in the ring, so Edge came out and threw him in. Once inside the ring, Chris Jericho tried to climb out of the cage leading to a wardrobe malfunction when Edge went to pull him down. Chris Jericho had the chance to walk out of the cage but chose to go back in to do more damage to Edge. At one point Edge and Jericho were on the top of the cage. And then they both went back into the ring followed by a codebreaker to Edge. Jericho was ultimately taken down by a spear. He should have walked out of the cage when he had the chance.
WWE Champion John Cena vs. Batista (Last Man Standing Championship Match)
Winner: John Cena by way of duct tape
How: The only way to win this match is to beat your opponent to the point that he cannot answer the referee’s 10-count to be the last man standing. After a few traditional moves, Batista grabbed a chair to bring into the ring. Batista loves to hit John Cena with a chair, perhaps to make a point since he resents John Cena for being the poster child for the WWE. Batista is such a bad guy that even though he is from D.C., the sold-out crowd in Baltimore still booed him. Batista did go for Cena’s legs and caused some sort of injury that left him limping. Batista basically took everything he could think of to keep John Cena down. Cena has definitely been injured. His injury is probably multiplied by the fact that he wears sneakers in the ring instead of boots which would have offered more protection to his ankle. Cena suffered back to back spears from Batista. Even little kids hate Batista. That’s just sad. But after throwing John Cena into a table and barricade, can he still get up? And he does. Even after getting an attitude adjustment through the announcer table, Batista was able to get up by the referee’s count of 9. After brining a table into the ring, Batista put Cena through the table with a Spine Buster and Cena is back on his feet. Batista followed that with a Batista Bomb. Can John Cena get up from this? Yes he can. John Cena was able to put Batista in an STF and tapping out or reaching for the rope couldn’t help Batista. And he’s still able to get up from that! John Cena takes duct tape and tapes Batista’s feet together around the corner of the ring. And John Cena remains the champion!
There will be fallout from these matches will be felt from weeks to come. The next major event for the WWE is tomorrow night’s Draft Night. It will be a special 3 hour event on the USA Network beginning at 8 pm EST.
