A lot of WWE wrestling programming includes dramatic feuds, heightened by intense violence in wrestling matches like Last Man Standing and Hell in a Cell matches. In-between the serious wrestling, there is plenty of room for comedic moments and throughout the history of the WWE, there have been several comedic wrestlers. Here is a look at some of the WWE’s funniest wrestlers.
The Rock: Just hearing a few of the Rock’s catch phrases and you’ll know why this charismatic superstar was so funny in a WWE ring. “Do you smell what the Rock is cookin'” is one of the most popular catch phrases from this WWE champion, but there were several others that made the Rock so funny.
He was quick-witted on the microphone and provided great banter with WWE interviewers as well as other wrestlers like Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H and The Big Show. One of the Rock’s funniest moments was when he interrupted Chris Jericho’s debut in the WWE with a rant on the former WCW wrestler.
The Rock also had a serious side, but fans liked him the best when he would display his comedic skills.
Santino Morello: When Santino debuted, he made a huge impact by defeating the Intercontinental Champion Umaga to win his title and make WWE history. After the serious Santino quickly died out with fans, the obnoxious and hilarious Santino took form.
Along with losing match after match, Santino was hilarious on the microphone, mostly for his flubbed words and mispronouncing of wrestler names.
He had his own talk show on WWE.com and even engaged in a short feud with Stone Cold Steve Austin over his starring role in “The Condemned.”
Austin retaliated by bringing a beer truck to the ring and soaking Santino is a homage to the time he soaked Vince McMahon, Shane McMahon and the Rock on WWE Raw.
“Stone Cold” Steve Austin: Along with multiple beer baths, Austin has caused so many laughs and destruction in his Hall of Fame run in the WWE. Among his highlights is the tormenting of WWE Chairman Vince McMahon.
Austin filled his car with cement, held him gunpoint until he peed his pants and used a monster truck to run over a limo. Austin has also blown up Triple H’s tour bus, smashed wrestlers through windshields and caused havoc in the WWE locker room.
One of Austin’s funniest segments was his supermarket battle with Booker T. Austin took Booker T all throughout a grocery store and attacked him with various food items, spoke over the loud speaker and even pushed Booker T around in a cart.
Austin has also had many catch phrases that provide laughs for WWE fans. One of the most innovative and potentially annoying is the “What?” catch phrase. No matter what a wrestler said, Austin what simply utter the phrase “What?”
This trend quickly caught on and soon it was the fans shouting “What?” after everything a wrestler said, even when Austin was not on WWE programming.
Edge: Edge started out in the WWE as a vampire-themed wrestler, but after years of dominating in the tag team brackets, he rose to singles stardom and quickly became to go-to guy for funny promos.
Edge is not a straight-out funny wrestler, but he has sarcasm and wit that draw WWE fans in.
Edge can do many funny rants on any of WWE opponents and it is often OK to push the limit because he is the heel character and the “R-rated Superstar.”
One of Edge’s funniest moments came in his “relationship” with former Smackdown general manager Vicki Guerrero.
These two were featured in segments where they would run along a beach, ride a see-saw together and they even had their own live marriage on WWE Smackdown.
WWE will continue to provide fans with laughs, because the comedic element of pro-wrestling is one of the best things they have to offer.
