The World Cup 2010 standings for Group C were literally settled at the last moment. Today, the World Cup 2010 standings settled the World Cup fates for the USA, England, Slovenia and Algeria. England, the USA and Slovenia controlled their destiny, as long as they won. But, in the event of a tie or loss, all three teams would need help. As of stoppage time in each game, it looked like England would win the group, while Slovenia advanced and America would be eliminated. Instead, the World Cup 2010 standings in Group C gave America the top seed, and knocked out Slovenia in one sudden moment.
Heading into today, Slovenia led the way with four points, while the USA and England were tied with two points, and Algeria had one. If Slovenia upset England, they would win the group, but, if they lost, they could be knocked out altogether. For America, a win against Algeria would put them in, but a loss would knock them out, and a tie could do the same.
The World Cup 2010 standings looked settled for Group C much of the way this morning. England took the quick lead over Slovenia, while the USA had yet another goal disallowed, and missed many more golden chances. As stoppage time began in both matches, it looked like England would win the group with five points, while Slovenia would still advance, despite the loss. A tie for America would give them three points, and send them home because of England’s win.
But, in the second minute of stoppage time, Landon Donovan was finally in the right place at the right time. Donovan’s rebound and goal changed the World Cup 2010 standings completely, in more ways than one. Not only is the USA alive, they have won a group for the first time in the modern era.
The Americans finished with five points, just like England. However, since the USA got more goals in group play, they finish as the Group C champions. They will play the Group D runners-up in the knockout round on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. est. Meanwhile, the English must play the Group D winner on Sunday.
As for Slovenia, the World Cup 2010 standings were especially cruel to them. They were a minute away from advancing to the knockout stage, and completing a Cinderella run. But, the smallest nation in the tournament was sent home by Donovan’s goal, with only four points. As the slogan says, one goal did change everything today.
For all the controversy and madness, the World Cup 2010 standings for Group C did go just as expected, with England and the USA advancing. The English overcame massive early disappointment, while the Americans looked destined to be knocked out today. However, it is a whole new ball game for them starting this weekend.
