The World Cup 2010 standings for Group A are now final. It appeared the World Cup 2010 standings would have Uruguay and Mexico reach the World Cup second round, and that is how the standings unfolded. It would have taken a lot for France or South Africa to get through, and ,ultimately, the deficit was too great. But, for a few brief moments, there was hope that South Africa could overtake Mexico, and give hope to their hometown fans. Yet, the final World Cup 2010 standings in Group A sent Bufana Bufana out of their own tournament.
Today, the Mexico vs Uruguay match was expected to just determine the Group A winner, while France vs South Africa meant nothing. The host nation had a -3 goal difference after their loss to Uruguay, so they needed a blowout win over France, and a blowout in Mexico vs Uruguay, to have a prayer.
Instead, the World Cup 2010 standings have Uruguay as the top team, after a 1-0 victory over Mexico. Since the South Africans only beat the French 2-1, it was not enough to advance. Both Mexico and South Africa end with four points, but the Mexicans have a goal difference of +1, while the host nation had a -2.
During the first half, there was hope that the World Cup 2010 standings would be different. Mexico vs Uruguay ended the first half with a Uruguay goal, knocking the Mexican goal difference to +1. Meanwhile, the South Africans got a quick 2-0 lead over reeling France, putting their goal difference at -1. If ‘Bufana Bufana’ got one more goal or two, and if the Mexicans gave up one or two more, the host nation could have pulled a miracle.
However, reality set in before long, as Mexico vs Uruguay stayed 1-0 throughout. Meanwhile, the French finally got their first goal of the tournament, though it was too late for them. But, it helped set the World Cup 2010 standings for Group A in stone, as Uruguay and Mexico will move on.
South Africa now becomes the first World Cup host nation to be eliminated in the first round. Their inability to hold a 1-0 lead over Mexico on Day 1, and their blowout loss to Uruguay, will haunt the country for some time. But, their disappointment is nothing compared to France, as the World Cup 2010 standings were a huge step down from 2006, in more ways than one.
The result of Mexico vs Uruguay didn’t impact who advanced from Group A. But, it did impact their future for the knockout round, as Uruguay will get to avoid Argentina in the round of 16. They are likely to face South Korea or Greece on Saturday, while Mexico will likely face Argentina on Sunday.
Although the World Cup 2010 standings favored both Mexico and Uruguay in Group A, they certainly favored one more than the other.
