It has been a year since Michael Jackson’s death on June 25, 2009. In some ways it is still surreal. Michael Jackson died at the age of 50, leaving behind three young children. The task of raising his children was undertaken by Michael Jackson ‘s 80 year old mother, Katherine Jackson. He was a mortal man, but he seemed so larger than life. From the account of his brother, Jermaine, Michael loved life and he did not want to die. Many people can probably remember exactly where they were when Michael Jackson died.
Michael touched the world with his talents, and there is no denying that Michael Jackson was a genius, both in the music he wrote, sang, and in his dancing. Much of his music preached a message of love and introspection. Michael Jackson was charitable and had a compassion for sick and impoverished children, which is almost unparalleled in the music industry.
Michael Jackson’s music spans generations, from our parents’ to our children’s generations. Michael gave us his best and his all from beginning to end, with very high standards of performance. His music served as the soundtrack for my youth and as well as many of his fans. Michael Jackson influenced so many of the newer artists of today such as Usher, Ne-Yo, Justin Timberlake, Ciara, and Brittany Spears to name a few. He has influenced others in the fact that he transcended racial barriers through excellence and consummate professionalism. Michael Jackson showed us that no matter who you are, or where you come from, dreams can come true.
Whatever we may think of Michael Jackson some things are certain: Michael Jackson was one of the greatest entertainers of modern times. Michael Jackson impacted the lives of millions of people one way or another. This world was a better place because of Michael Jackson. There was a lot more people in this world that loved him, rather than hated him. This was evidenced by the world’s reaction to his death.
Some people who may be reading this didn’t like Michael Jackson for a myriad of reasons. They may have felt that he was “wacko”. They may have felt that Michael Jackson was guilty of the former criminal charges brought against him. Some may feel that he was bizarre and looked freakish due to excessive cosmetic surgery. Others may feel that Michael was past his prime and irrelevant.
There is truth to some of these statements, but this is what we must keep in mind: Michael was a world renowned entertainer, but he was a human. He did a lot of good in this world, but he also had his own personal demons that he was battling. So in other words, he was not perfect and he had issues. Some of those issues originate from circumstances beyond his control.
We all have skeletons in our closets and our own personal demons to slay. Consider this; How do you think you would cope with the stress and pressure that he lived with since he was a child? Do you think that you would walk away unscathed by constant scrutiny, ridicule, mockery, and criticism? As for the charges of child molestation, child abduction, etc., he was acquitted. Inspite of what skeptics wanted the verdict to be, he was INNOCENT.
May Michael Jackson rest in peace. Now that he is dead, he won’t have to worry about the media circus, that his life was. It is really a shame that we did not celebrate and respect him enough while he was still living. Hopefully his children will have a chance to live a somewhat normal life. Michael Jackson’s legacy will live on until the end of time.
