It’s father’s Day; A day that should be filled with joy and gratitude’ A day that is meant to be spent with smiles and laughter. But things can get in the way of that if you simply forget the reason for which this day is being celebrated.
I awakened this morning to the sun tapping heavily on my window. What a beautiful sign of love from God to brighten and start another day for me. And I was also happy because I was going to be celebrating my father today.
I have the greatest father in the world. He has been there from day one. He is unconditionally loving and caring, even when I don’t deserve it. He listens and gives great advice. He gives me a shoulder to cry on when needed and assistance to lift me up out of any situation. I can count on him and never doubt that fact. He is a great father; has always been and still is today.
I wanted so much to make him the biggest and most delicious dinner that I possibly could. But first things first: my morning workout. I started with the Wii Fit Step Aerobics. While in the midst of it, I paused the game to put food on the fire of to simply check on the mean and return to my workout. In 45 minutes, I had my black eyed peas cooking, I had the turkey legs boiling and I completed step aerobics, yoga and strength training.
Something got me a little disenfranchised. We’ve had family staying with us for a bit which I love. It is always a pleasure to be in good company; especially those who could survive such a frightening disaster like an earthquake. I was in the middle of peeling potatoes for my potato salad and the door bell rang. I asked my aunt to open the door for me and she told me that she can’t.
Okay, my aunt is disabled but has since learned to reuse her legs, but has lost all faith in the possibility of walking without a walker or a wheel chair so doesn’t try. She would rather sit down all day and have everyone work for her then to try to work her legs so she could build up the stamina to walk normally again. I didn’t get upset at her but instead at the idea that she is not interested in holding on to faith. But you cannot love a person in slices. You must take them as they are.
But then the worst of the worst thing happened. My rice burned and was ruined. Uuuh! I really wanted to have a nice dinner made for the first man in my life who has ever treated me like a Queen and now this. Could it get any worse?
I decided, maybe if I go outside and clear my head, things would get better. And it actually did. I had forgotten to pick up wine and guess what? The winery was opened; on a Sunday. That was something to smile about. I stopped by the supermarket and they had a few of the items I needed on sale; another reason to smile. I got back home and a parking spot was waiting for me. That was a real reason to smile.
Despite my meal being messed up just a little bit, there was so much other food that that one little part shouldn’t have been such a big deal. So many people have nothing to eat and yet, I had prepared a six course meal and had wine and dessert to eat it with and had still prepared enough to feed my entire family. And I realized something. A smile and positive thinking can ameliorate any situation. My word of the day today is ameliorate. Ameliorate is a verb that means to make or become better.
Father’s day comes but only once a year even though that special man deserves to be celebrated every day. He has given me everything and in return even the smallest thing may be too small to give in return, in my mind, but he appreciates even the littlest gesture. And so I smile just because there is a reason to. I am here with my father and family on this blessing of a bright and sunny day and we are truly blessed.
Word of the Day: Ameliorate
Amazing how blessed I am to have a father like the dad I have in my life.
Many may say the same thing about theirs, but in my opinion, the best father in the world is mine.
Everyday comes with its ups and downs but you have to take life it in strides.
Life can become a heavy burden if you let stress rule your life.
I am learning these days, to see the cup half full instead of half empty.
Only when you choose optimism over pessimism will you see each day as plenty.
Rewarding is a smile that is received just because he is proud of you and simply appreciates.
Almost let a good day get wasted that positive thinking and writing helped to ameliorate.
Today is a day not like any day but a new day of hope meant to be celebrated.
Every day that you awaken and survive the storm should be a reason to smile and be elated.
