The Wimbledon 2010 results have been wild in week one. But, the Wimbledon 2010 results in week two will determine the 2010 champions, so hopes are for even better matches. It is crunch-time for the top singles players in the world, as they face even tougher competition ahead. For Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, that might seem like an unsettling prospect, with all the trouble they faced early on. But, today, Federer and Nadal look to start the next round of Wimbledon 2010 off right, along with other favorites.
Federer may have already rallied back from his bad start, as evidenced by his fourth round match with Jurgen Meltzer. After two troubling opening matches, Federer got his second consecutive straight set win, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3. This put him into the quarterfinals against Tomas Berdych, who defeated Daniel Brands in four sets.
But, the Wimbledon 2010 results today may center on Rafael Nadal, who needs to rebound like Federer did. Two straight five set matches, and controversy about not meeting the Queen, have slowed the No. 1 player down. Getting a good win against Paul-Henri Mathieu would silence his critics, and renew hope for a Federer-Nadal final.
If Nadal makes it through, he could get another showdown with Robin Soderling. The French Open runner-up leads David Ferrer by a set, as the Wimbledon 2010 results may pair Soderling and Nadal in another major. Clearly, Nadal’s road to the final is still not a smooth one.
As for the women, Serena Williams got her first major test against Maria Sharapova today. She survived an 11-9 tiebreaker in the first set, before finishing Sharapova 7-6, 6-4. Venus Williams also got a test against Jarmilia Groth, before getting by 6-4, 7-6.
However, the Wimbledon 2010 results weren’t as favorable for the Williams sisters’ competition. Both the third and fourth seeds lost today in two short matches. Third seed Carolina Wozniacki once again disappointed at a major, losing to Petra Kvitova 6-2, 6-0. Meanwhile, fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic fell down 6-1, 3-0 to Vera Zvonareva before retiring.
Today’s Wimbledon 2010 results set all of the women’s quarterfinal matches up. The highest seed left to challenge the Williams sisters is eighth seed Kim Clijsters, who defeated Justine Henin 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Clijsters can face Venus Williams in the semifinals, while Serena Williams’ side of the bracket has just one seed left – ninth seed Na Li, whom Williams faces next.
The men still have a few matches left today, as Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Andy Roddick and Soderling have fourth round showdowns. Afterward, the Wimbledon 2010 results will narrow down the competition even further, as the Fourth of July weekend finals get closer.
