Will’s grandmother once told him, ‘Don’t let failures go to your heart and don’t let success go to your head.’ He has experienced very little failure in comparison to his vast successes. In 1998 People Magazine named him as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world. In 2007 he was appointed the 5th position on EW’s 50 smartest people in Hollywood list. In that same year Newsweek promoted him as the most powerful actor on the planet. In 2008 TV Guide included him as one of America’s top 10 most fascinating people. Will was a millionaire before he was twenty and for years Fortune Magazine continuously kept him on their “Richest 40” list of the 40 wealthiest Americans under 40 years of age.
He is a Christian, husband, father, humanitarian, presidential friend, actor, rapper, and producer of records, television and films.As a teenager he began rapping. In the 1980’s and early 1990’s he joined forces with his friend Jeff Townes. They became known as DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. In 1989 they were the 1st ever Grammy winners in the rap category performing ” Parents Just Don’t Understand.” Their single “Summertime” also won a Grammy award.
As a solo artist Will recorded two multi-platinum albums, “Big Willie Style” in 1997 and “Willennium” in 1999. In 1998 he recorded two # 1 hits “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It” and “Just the Two of Us” which he wrote for his son Trey, who was born from his first marriage. Willard Christopher Smith III (Trey) appeared in the “Just the Two of Us” video with his father. Will’s 2005 album “Lost & Found” was a tremendous success merely because his hit single “Switch” was recorded on it.
In 1990 he broadened his career appearing on television sets across America as NBC’s “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” The last showing aired May 20, 1996 with reruns still in syndication. In the mid 1990’s he gained popularity stretching out into another new media and has been dubbed the #1 box office draw in Hollywood.
Will has 19 films to his credit, of these 14 have grossed over $100 million and four have grossed more than $500 million on a global scale. He is the only actor to have eight consecutive films gross over $100 million and eight consecutive films open in the #1 spot. It was the 1995 movie “Bad Boys” that launched him into stardom. As a father he has included all 3 of his children in his productions. His son Jadan Christopher Syre, named for his mother Jada, portrayed his son in the 2005 film “Pursuit of Happyness.” Will and Jada’s daughter Willow Camille Reign played his daughter in the 2007 film “I Am Legend.”
Will holds the record for the most “Kids Choice” awards. He has won 6. His fans spread across boundaries of age, sex, race, religion and political preference. On December 10, 2007 Will was inducted into Grauman’s Chinese Theaters’ famous impressions on Hollywood Boulevard. He made imprints of both his hands and feet.
Will was one of the artists on the Quincy Jones’ new 25th anniversary recording of the charity song “We Are the World” produced to support relief in Haiti. Will and Jada are raising money for 500,000 school children in Haiti by selling artwork signed by music artists who performed at the Nobel Peace Prize concert in Oslo on December 2, 2009. It is a “World Map of Hunger” with personalized silhouettes of the artists drawn by Will himself.
The 2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner was President Barack Obama. President Obama has considered creating a film about his 2008 election campaign. If he does it will be after his presidency is ended. He hopes that Will Smith will portray him. President Obama says Will is perfect for the part, as he has “the ears.”
