There is more concern today with the food choices we make, because of the way they are processed chemically with additives and then marketed deceptively. Another grave health concern is cancer, heart disease and obesity, especially amongst young children. Everywhere you go whether it is the shopping mall, a restaurant seen advertised on TV or the grocery store with many food items glaring right at you to pick them up we are being inundated with food choices. Unfortunately some of them seem healthy enough, while others are obviously not. The temptation may be hard to resist, because they taste so good, but the time has come to re-think what you eat. Here now are twenty such foods you should not ever eat and the very helpful reasons why.
.) Fried chicken – A definite no-brainer since the oil used has a high saturated fat content. There’s countless way to make your chicken crunchy without frying it in oil. I love using Shake n’ Bake.
.) French Fries – Just about everyone loves potatoes, especially deep fried in trans-fat oil. This is the worst food you could eat since it is high-glycemic.
.) Smoked & Cured Fish – You may have thought this was a healthy method to flavor and preserve fish. Besides using a smoking kiln it is cured in brine that is also mixed with other additives such as sodium and potassium nitrates. This can eventually lead to long-term heath problems.
.) Milk Produced with Artificial Hormones – Dairy farmers use growth hormones to increase milk production which may cause udder infections and other complications when producing milk. As a result high levels of an insulin growth factor (IGF) can be traced in people who have been exposed to it in their milk. This has lead to breast, prostate and colon cancer.
Fast Food Joints or Restaurant Foods:
.) Wendy’s Sweet & Spicy Boneless Chicken Wings – Any fast food or restaurant food should be dealt with extreme caution, but these four items are the worst culprits of all. However, these chicken wings alone contain enough salt that you’d normally acquire in three healthy meals for an entire day.
.) Macaroni Grill’s Fettuccini Alfredo – Kid’s Meal – Normally children’s meals in restaurants are much lower in calories and portions. Not only is there bigger portions and a high calorie intake, more fat is also included that goes beyond what an adult is required on a daily basis.
.) Pizza Hut’s Meaty P’Zone – These one pound pizza crustcalzones are meant to be shared not consumed by one person as the television commercial depicts. They are high in sodium, one and a half times the daily limit. Eating a P’Zone all by itself is like eating six cheese slices in one sitting.
.) Olive Garden’s Tour of Italy Entrée (Lasagna, Chicken Parmigiana, & Creamy Fettuccini Alfredo) – Common sense should tell you this is loaded with calories and saturated fat. The calorie intake alone on this three-part entrée including their famous breadsticks and salad is 2,000.
Snacks, Desserts & Junk Food
.) Coldstone’s Peanut Butter & Chocolate Shake – On paper it may sound somewhat healthy, because peanut butter contains protein. Don’t be fooled, because this milkshake contains more than a day’s worth of calories. Also, it has three times the allowed daily limit of saturated fat.
.) Smoothie King’s Hulk Strawberry Smoothie – You might think since they contain fruits and yogurt it’s got to be healthy. Sorry to disappoint you, but they are made with ice cream or milk chock full of sugar. Drinking one of these smoothies is like eating two Big Macs side by side.
.) The Cheesecake Factory Chris’ Outrageous Chocolate Cake – It’s the equivalent of eating three McDonald’s Quarter Pounders for dessert. It is more than obvious this delectable cake features layers of moist chocolate cake, brownies, toasted coconut pecan filing and creamy chocolate chip coconut cheesecake. This five-inch slice is 1,550 in calories, 32 teaspoons of sugar and 43 grams of saturated fat.
.) Pop Secret Movie Theater Butter Popcorn Snack Size Bags – Microwave popcorn in general is not very good for you, because of the chemicals used such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). This is found in the lining of the bag that vaporizes in the microwave. These chemicals stay in your body for years and can lead to various cancers such as the liver and pancreas. However, this brand is also loaded with trans-fat.
.) Lunchables Deep Dish Pepperoni – You’ve seen these convenient type foods that serve like a lunch box in the refrigerated section. Oftentimes they are used for kids when going to school or some other activity. Unfortunately this processed food contains too much sodium and fat allowable for an eight year old child.
.) Pop Tarts – Brown Sugar Cinnamon – What is annoying is their packaging. Just one pop tart is fine for breakfast, but they come two in a pack that does not allow for the other one to be eaten later. Your child ends up eating both of them, when combined features enough fat and sugar that goes over the daily limit.
.) Progresso Traditional, Vegetable Classics and Rich & Hearty soups – Loaded with enough sodium that goes over the daily quota of salt needed.
.) Haagen Dazs Ice Cream – Just an average half-cup serving of this ice cream contains a half day’s worth of saturated fat. To make it even worse there is more than the required allowed cholesterol and 300 calories to boot.
.) Synthetic Soft Drinks – Most everyone loves drinking soda pop or carbonated drinks like Coca-Cola, but they present a whole host of health issues. For instance some reports have stated they lead to osteoporosis in women. There are risks of obesity and dental problems too. They are also bad for the stomach lining due to these drinks being very acidic.
Deceptively Healthy Foods:
.) Amy’s Organic Thai Coconut Soup – Now we come to those deceptively healthy foods that in reality are not very healthy. This has all the makings of a health food item, because it contains vegetables and tofu for protein. Unfortunately there is too much sodium and fat that is half of your daily limit.
.) VitaminWater – Talk about deceptive practices when the nutrition label is for a serving when the bottle is actually for multiple servings. All it basically contains is sugar-sweetened water. It contains 33 grams of sugar, whereas Coca-Cola has 6 grams of more sugar.
.) Powerbar Performance Energy Cookies & Cream – Alarm bells should go off when an energy bar has cookies and cream as a flavor. This bar that looks like a candy bar only contains 1 gram of fiber and more than three-fourth’s the daily limit of sugar.
That’s a lot of foods to remember, but most of them are common sense. Most likely many did not surprise you. It is amazing how much salt and sugar has been added unnecessarily to make you crave for more. Just remember to avoid as many of these twenty food items as possible for your own good health.
