Why is texting and driving idiotic and inconsiderate? Driving a motor vehicle should be done with complete attention. I shouldn’t have to say that text messaging is a distraction but to this day I still run across drivers who are typing away while they continue to drive.
This texting and driving doesn’t always seem to happen on the inner city roads. It seems to be a big hit with drivers who are on the interstate-where speeds are much higher and the elements can change very quickly. I pass a girl recently who was texting and driving on the Interstate. It was a few days later that I was paying attention, not text messaging, and drilled a deer. Our car was nearly totaled and I was watching the road.
The question crossed my mind concerning what would happen to that girl if she were text messaging and driving when a deer came across her path.
Much to my chagrin, I just took the blow without much opportunity to avoid the deer with my accident. It makes me wonder how much the girl who was texting and driving simultaneously would have over corrected once she realized she was about to hit the deer. Would she have flipped her car instead of smashing straight into the deer if she were text messaging and driving? Would she have ran off the road after being completely startled while looking down to text her buddies? It’s agonizing to think that someone could take another group of peoples lives into their hands by not paying attention to the road.
I am not even one of those people who will argue that talking on the cell phone is a bad idea. I understand the calls come in and sometimes you need to answer them for business or getting driving directions. It’s not the best place to talk on the phone but it’s more understandable than texting. Text messaging is wrong because it involves looking down at the phone and trying to figure out which buttons should be pushed. It gets even more difficult on some phones if the text message needs punctuation or spaces. Let’s just say it’s hard to do when you are using total concentration.
Still many drivers will continue to text message and drive despite any laws made against such actions. I still see it from time to time and wonder why someone would choose to text over human interaction to begin with. Wouldn’t it just make more sense to call someone? What is happening with this society that a text message serves as a way to openly communicate with someone? You don’t hear the tone of voice so that always leaves text messaging as something that can be interpreted in several different ways. So why is so imperative that some drivers can not wait to reach their destination to start texting? Instead they chose to take lives into their own hands, literally, by text messaging and driving.
I hate to sound parental because I don’t feel like one that needs to lecture someone on their own safety. I do think when it involves other people-whether it is passengers in that car or other drivers on the road-then it needs to be said. Texting while driving is idiotic and inconsiderate. And it just might get you killed.
