According to Taylor Lautner, teen star of the new movie ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon’, during filming of the latest episode in the saga recently, he had to spend all day carrying co-star Kristen Stewart around a forest. Why, you might ask? Simple, right? He had to prove his macho manliness and lugging Kristen Stewart around all day seemed the right way to do it. But, is that explanation for Taylor Lautner suddenly manning up as simple as it sounds or is there another reason?
At first look, most people would think Taylor Lautner is just another teen actor trying to prove he’s tough and can do something that even ‘Twilight’s’ director, Chris Weitz, said he didn’t have to do. Originally a rig was going to be set up in the forest, which Kristen Stewart would be suspended from. Then, Taylor Lautner could hoist her over his shoulder and walk for hours, while still looking like he was actually carrying her. But, Lautner told an MTV interviewer, when he got to the set and they tried out the rig it just didn’t look real. So he decided picking her up himself would be better.
So, authenticity of the shot is one reason Lautner decided to forgo the rig and carry all 110 pounds of Kristen Stewart himself. But…..that’s still not the real reason. That reason is a whole ‘nuther story.
A few months back, when ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon” was being cast, director Chris Weitz looked at the original cast members as well as potential new ones. When it came to Taylor Lautner reprising his role as Jacob Black in the new movie, Weitz was concerned. In the story of ‘New Moon’ , the character of Jacob Black has developed some physical changes. Now bigger and more bulkier, Weitz was worried Taylor Lautner was too slight for the part so spoke to him about casting another actor in the role instead. Lautner though wanted to keep the role and, apparently, told Chris Weitz he could “bulk up” for the part. And that’s what he did.
Over a couple of months, Lautner worked for hours a day lifting weights and, by the time ‘New Moon’ began filming he’d gained 30 lbs, mostly in muscle weight.
But, of course, as an actor I would imagine he was also concerned about continuing to prove to Weitz he was as strong as he said he was. And voila. Hoisting Kirsten Stewart over his shoulder and being macho man for a day was a great way to prove that.
As much as the whole thing seems a bit silly (and don’t even get me started on Stephenie Meyer, the mediocre writer of the Twilight series and her badly told stories), you’ve got to give praise to Taylor Lautner who liked Jacob Black that much and wanted to be in the new ‘Twilight’ movie that badly that he did what it took to keep the part. Even if it did mean almost breaking his back carrying a dead weight (sorry, Kristen!) around a forest all day.
