Joran Van der Sloot has been charged with the murder of Stephany Flores and the chief suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. Awaiting his trial he is reportedly passing time reading love letters.
“Joran you are so h…!” Most people would finish that sentence with words like horrible, hideous, harming, hurtful, horrendously cruel, hellacious, hateful, hopelessly egoistic,…I am sure you can find a few more.
According to a report from the Associated Press the Dutch Newspaper De Telegraaf reports that Joran Van der Sloot is receiving letters that carry a tone more likely to read words like hot, handsome and huggable. Women and girls are proposing marriage and proclaiming their love for the Dutch murder suspect. Joran is quoted saying “One of them even wants me to get her pregnant.”
Just recently Joran Van der Sloot’s ex-girlfriend, Melody Granadillo, went on TV talking about their former love-affair. She speaks of how innocent and sweet it was, how romantic and “real” it seemed. That was all before she found out that he was lying and cheating on her. Lying, that is a side of Joran Van der Sloot the world has become familiar with over the past five years.
Then why is it that women would want to marry a suspected murderer?
This phenomenon is not new. Convicted killers and criminals often get fan letters and marriage proposals like those Van der Sloot claims to have. The answer to the question why might be another H-word.
It is the sexual attraction to people who have committed crimes, especially violent and cruel crimes.
Assume you don’t know anything about Joran Van der Sloot’s history, and take a look at him. He is tall at 6 foot 4 inches, some find him handsome, he speaks several languages, usually has a smile or smirk on his face, is said to be charming and with all the media coverage has become some kind of celebrity. Not terribly bad, probably attractive to many.
What appalls most people is having the knowledge of Joran Van der Sloot’s history. He is a self-admitted liar, a gambler, a playboy, a mommy’s boy, appears arrogant to some degree and most importantly he is a suspected serial-killer!
It is exactly that knowledge that may be attractive to some women.
Maybe it is the knowledge that a boyfriend behind bars won’t cheat on them. Someone behind bars also has the time to always be there to read and answer letters.
Maybe it is a savior mentality where someone thinks they can change or tame someone like Joran Van der Sloot bringing out their “good” side.
It could simply be the fame and notoriety of high profile criminals that is attractive, possibly the thought they could become famous themselves by association.
Another attraction could be the thought of playing with fire. A dangerous criminal that nobody can figure out, yet one could get close to him with little perceived risk.
Whatever it is that attracts women to Joran Van der Sloot, the average person will probably never entirely understand the desire to be with a criminal or murderer.
