When you hear about Mel Gibson and his ongoing child custody case with ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, don’t forget, Mel is still married. Funnily enough, Robyn Gibson, who Mel has been married to for 28 years filed for divorce last year after three years of separation but, on Thursday, still defended her husband in court. In a court declaration, Robyn Gibson said she had never experienced any abuse at the hands of Mel Gibson and neither had any of her children. This, in direct opposition to what Oksana Grigorieva is saying. But why would Robyn Gibson say this, even if it is true?
When Mel Gibson first met Robyn Gibson, they were both tenants in the same house in Adelaide and Robyn was a dental nurse. Coming from a non-acting background, Robyn Gibson has always seemed to have her feet firmly planted on the ground and, even after seven children and 28 years of marriage with Mel, she still stayed largely out of the spotlight. Even when she filed for divorce last year, she didn’t speak publicly with the media about it, preferring to deal with it privately and with good taste, keeping the problems she had with Mel within the Gibson family.
Oksana Grigorieva, on the other hand, has proven she’s a completely different type of person than Robyn Gibson. Dramatic, outspoken and used to being in the limelight, Grigorieva was determined everyone was going to hear about her alleged abuse from Mel, even if it meant taping their private phone conversations and passing them onto the media. There’s class and there’s no class, and we all know which camp Grigorieva falls into.
For Robyn Gibson, just the nasty publicity that’s coming to her soon-to-be ex-husband from the abuse charges must be excrutiatingly painful. Don’t forget, she has seven children with Mel and, no matter what she may think of him in private, he is the father of her children and, what hurts him ultimately hurts them.
In fact, unlike so many soon-to-be ex-wives, who do everything they can to be vindictive and mean, striking out to get back at the man who supposedly hurt them, Robyn Gibson has chosen to act otherwise. She’s chosen to be honest, tell the truth and stand up for what she believes, even if it means defending the man who she’ll soon be divorced from.
Methinks Mel chose the wrong woman and should have stayed with the one he already had. She was the real ‘keeper’ and not the nutty Russian.
