As Martin Luther King wished for us not so long ago, the equality of the human race and for all to be judged by the content of their character not by the color of their skin. I would like to take Dr. King’s thought a bit further – nor should we be judged by our sexual orientation or any other characteristic. This topic has been a continual thorn in the side of humanity since the subject of gay marriage surfaced. I write on this today, because of the recent accusations thrown at Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan. I find that over and over again the human race continues to make the same mistake. We continue to judge people by those things that are not important. We should be judging this woman by her competency to do the job she has been selected to do and nothing more!
I don’t believe that this type of personal information is relevant to her skills and capability as a US Supreme Court judge. Nor should anyone in his right mind think so as well. I believe this type of fear and ignorance that runs rampant throughout our nation time and time again is our biggest downfall as a human race. I understand that we still love to gossip and find out all the ‘dirt’ on a person we can. Again, this is the flaw within our humanity. We put people of notoriety under a microscope and then get some sick kind of enjoyment out of their misery. We would not have as many so called ‘reality’ TV shows otherwise. Everyone loved to see Simon Cowell yell and embarrass American Idol contestants, didn’t they?
So, now we have this woman who needs to defend herself against these accusations because a photo surfaced of her playing softball. Come on people, let’s get real here!! More women are playing men’s sports than ever before in our nation’s history. So, are we going to assume that every woman playing professional basketball is gay? What about the high school and college girls playing ice hockey? What is wrong with this picture?
And what if in fact she is gay – so what? There are several states in our country now that allow for gay marriage and what negative thing has happened as a result – NOTHING!! The hypocrites that are so vocal about proper morality are the one’s that are preventing us as a human race from evolving further. We need to find within ourselves the courage to move on from these trivial issues and concentrate on the real important issues of our day!
What about the war in Afghanistan? What about the floods of Tennessee? What about the oil spill in the Gulf? What about national health care? What about jobs and our economy? These are the real issues we need to talk about NOT whether someone is gay or straight, white or black, Christian or Muslim. We need to rise above this ridiculous pettiness and become the human race that our forefathers had hoped we would be. We need to judge one another by how we treat our fellow man not by whom or what we are. The world is here for us all, not for the privileged or a select few but for everyone to enjoy and to find peace and tranquility.
