The American Idol finalists, Crystal Bowersox and Lee Dewyze, hit the Nokia Theatre stage Tuesday evening in front of 7,000 screaming fans, four judges, and an American Idol television viewing audience of millions for the traditional finale sing-off. The two contestants sang three songs each — one of their own choosing, one a producer’s pick, and the song that will become their first single should they become the Season 9 American Idol. Going into the two-night three-hour finale, Lee Dewyze had all the momentum and the support of the Vegas oddsmakers, despite Crystal Bowersox’ consistently good performances throughout the season. But will he win? Or will Mamasox triumph in the end?
American Idol judge Simon Cowell told Ellen Degeneres on her show that he believed that Lee Dewyze was going to win American Idol this season. He said that 5 or 6 weeks ago, he would have said Crystal would win. But Lee’s story and his growth on the show gave him a momentum that would probably carry him to victory. Cowell then admitted that he had been wrong about the winner of American Idol for the past two seasons, leading him to jokingly point out that nobody was listening to him anymore.
Fellow judge Randy Jackson appeared on George Lopez’ TBS talk show and repeated Simon Cowell’s prediction. He also believes Lee Dewyze will be named the winner on Wednesday’s finale show.
Adam Lambert, last season’s runner-up (and one of the two predictions Simon Cowell got wrong), told Hollywood Life when asked who he wanted to see win Season 9 that he thought Crystal Bowersox was “great” and he loved her “anti-establishment attitude.”
But those predictions are based on opinion and analysis. What about cold, hard data? According to Dial Idol, a website that tracks voting trends, Lee Dewyze recorded almost double the number of busy signals as Crystal Bowersox in Tuesday evening’s voting. Dial Idol works under the assumption that busy signals indicate more people voting for that option. And if one would scoff at such an assumption, Dial Idol has tracked the voting trend of the last six American Idol finals and predicted correctly five of them. The sixth, last year’s finale with Kris Allen and Adam Lambert, had been too close to call, so they made no prediction.
It seems that the commons consensus is that Lee Dewyze will win American Idol Season 9.
The winner of American Idol will be announced on Wednesday’s two-hour season finale show. Incidentally, it will mark the last episode for American Idol judge Simon Cowell, who leaves the show after nine seasons, leaving only Randy Jackson as the sole remaining judge from American Idol’s first season.
