Whiskey North is a nightclub located on 11921 North Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa, Florida. Because there are no other bars or nightclubs nearby, its location might seem out of the way initially, especially if you are used to club hopping in Ybor City, but that is actually one of its perks in that it discourages most of the trouble makers from making the trip. It is located in a strip mall type setting but don’t let that keep you from driving out and joining the action. Parking, depending on where you park and certain promotional days, is free. The parking is actually in the back of the strip mall and it is fairly easy to find a spot if you follow the well placed signs and directions. Parking is plentiful and you won’t have a hard time finding a spot but depending on the time you arrive you might have to pay 10$ to park, especially if you park in the lot past the chain link fence. From my experience, parking in the gravel lot before the chain link fence is free but it feels up pretty quick so get there early.
What to expect: Prices range, clientele, and what to wear
The nightclub only admits people 21 years of age and over so make sure you have your ID out. Ladies are charged a 5$ cover after 8 on Friday nights and a 10 cover after midnight on Saturday nights. Guys are charged a 5$ cover from 8-11 on Friday nights and 10$ after 11 while on Saturday nights the cover is 10$ throughout the whole night. If you are considering VIP, then the price goes up to 20$. The type of people who go to Whiskey North are in the age range of mid 20s to late 40s so the club scene is bustling without being too old and stuffy or young and rowdy. Friday nights are the time to go if you’re into drink specials with promotions ranging from a free martini for every lady to super happy hour where you pay 12$ for an open bar. Dress code is strictly enforced at Whiskey North and if the staff find you lacking they won’t let in you. That means dress your best especially for the guys (no plain white t shirts or ripped jeans). The ladies can get away with more but I suggest wearing a sexy dress just to attract some attention.
What to expect: The atmosphere and the staff
Whiskey North is beautiful venue with gorgeous wood paneled walls and ceilings that almost give it a rustic feel. The conical shaped red-orange ceiling lamps even add to that cabin-like touch. There is plenty of space to dance and move around although by 1am the club is usually packed. There is plenty of seating in the form of black leather couches but they are usually roped off with VIP members or occupied. This means that you might want to forget the stilettos if you plan to be there for any amount of time. There is at least three different bars: one on the main floor of the club, one on the VIP floor which is just above the main floor, and an outside bar. For the most part, the bartender at the outside bar is pretty entertaining and he gets your drinks to you in record time. The same can’t be said of the bartenders at the other bars and the drinks aren’t made that well from my experience. A lot of the staff, excluding the bathroom attendants, are rude and pushy acting like they either don’t want to be there or that you are an annoyance to them but other than that club is a lot of fun. The DJ is usually in tune with the crowd pounding out beats that range from hip-hop to Latin that keep the party going well into the wee hours.
Overall Assessment: Whiskey North is a pretty fun place to be during the weekend. The only setbacks would be the unfriendly staff and that there isn’t really a diverse crowd when it comes to racial makeup (most patrons are African American). Other than that, Whiskey North is a nice place to get a feel of and enjoy a night dancing.
