I’ve never liked Dr. Phil. I think he’s fake, obnoxious and far too judgmental about the lives of people he’s supposedly ‘helping’, as in a five minute discussion, you can’t possibly know what circumstances took those people to the bad place they’re in today. He’s also milking people’s troubles for the enormous amounts of money he makes from them, so much so he’s recently bought a $30 million house in California. Now, I don’t know about you, but buying a $30 million home while much of America is struggling to find a job seems to me a little less like ‘getting real’ and more like showing how being a ‘fake psychologist’ can make you rich.
Dr. Phil started out as plain Phil McGraw from Texas. He got a PhD in Psychology, then went into business with his father, Dr. Joe McGraw, in Wichita Falls, Texas. But, it was his signing up to present the Pathways” seminars that set him on his road of riches and fame. “Pathways” presented ways to help people create success and much of what he classifies as his own ideas for success was actually taken from Pathways”, without him ever giving them credit or a financial stake in his success.
Dr. Phil hit the big time though when he began appearing on Oprah with his version of pop psychology – quick fixes for your life’s problems, in less than five minutes – and that’s one big reason he can now afford a $30 million house. People who want a quick fix, and liked that Dr. Phil spoke plainly (and often rudely) to people who had problems, made him an instant success. Since then, he’s gone into selling diet products (and been sued by people who spent $120 a month but said they didn’t work), appears in his own TV show ‘Dr Phil’ and has tried various TV spin-offs.
Meanwhile, Dr. Phil hit the Forbes Celebrity 100 List of the world’s richest celebrities as, at that time, he was making over $30 million a year. Now think about that. While he’s ‘counseling’ people who have hit rock bottom on how to get out of debt, solve debilitating problems like abuse and rape, or get away from situations that could actually kill them, he’s making more money than several thousand Americans put together by simply opening his mouth and giving his trite and simplistic version of how to make your life better.
Dr. Phil has had several lawsuits filed against him and it’s also been alleged by some people he’s extremely abusive to his wife and staff. He also made the news a couple of years ago for entering Britney Spears hospital room without permission and attempting to stage an intervention, against the wishes of her family. All of it, apparently, to try to persuade her to come on his TV show. Ratings, anyone?
Dr. Phil, in my opinion, is a great example of what’s wrong with America. People believing the lies others tell them and doing anything for a ‘quick fix’ for their problems, whether it be weight loss, getting out of debt or leaving an abusive husband. But Dr. Phil buying a $30 million house actually doesn’t surprise me. A $30 million house is a perfect symbol of what Dr. Phil stands for – all style and no substance and a complete waste of money.
