When asked what I’d do with lottery winnings, many things crossed my mind. If you know me at all, it’s actually quite comical for me to write about something like this. I am likely the most non-materialistic person you will ever meet. People are important to me. Things – not so much – or even not at all. But since I was asked, my mind did wander. So here are just five of the things this homeschool mom, writer, and advocate for green living would do if I won the lottery.
Pay Off Any Debts and Pay Certain Bills in Advance
The first thing I would do – and what any smart person wining the lottery should do – is get rid of any and all outstanding debts at the time. No one who comes upon any sum of money should have outstanding debts, unless the debts outweigh the money. If that’s the case, some kind of financial advisory is likely in order. I also would pay certain bills in advance and pay off any loans I may have at the time.
Farm for Educational and Charitable Purposes
I’ve always wanted to own a 100% organic, free range, sustainable farm. Currently, I am saving toward that goal. Right now, a more reasonable expectation is to buy the land and turn it into a farm, bit by bit as is financially feasible. However, if I won the lottery, that dream would likely become a reality much quicker. Yes, my family would live there, but that’s not my sole reason for wanting a farm. I want to use the farm for educational and humanity purposes. Of course my family (and visitors to the farm) would benefit from some of the produce and other products from the farm. But, I also plan on donating much of it to local food banks, shelters, and other areas of need.
Children of all ages and abilities could come learn about how a farm woks firsthand. There are many farms that offer programs, but mine would be completely free, which means no child would have to miss out. I also would make it highly accessible to those with disabilities. I have read numerous studies stating that children with certain disabilities and conditions, such as autism, can improve greatly from animal therapy. I plan to offer that, with trained experts as well. I would off course, continue my writing. It would just be in a more interesting setting.
Build the Coolest Homeschool Classroom Ever
This is a no-brainer if you know me. Another thing I’d do is build my kids the coolest homeschool classroom ever! It’d be environmentally friendly and have everything they’ll need from the grades they’re in now on up through high school. They have sufficient technology and learning materials now. But of course, since education is our thing, I can see us really splurging in this area. Their classroom would end up being better than the best classroom in the best of colleges and universities. It would definitely be a state-of-the-art one-of-a-kind homeschool classroom if we won the lottery.
Put College Money Away for all the Kids
Well, this is a given. Obviously, even if you don’t know me, you can tell my commitment to education just from reading my words here. We already save for college, but if my family were to win the lottery, I’d be sure there was plenty of money set aside for a good college education for all the kids. If they earn scholarships instead, they can then use that money when they get out on their own. Ether way, it’s money the kids can use to better their futures.
Give to the Less Fortunate
I mentioned about giving to the less fortunate via our potential farm. However, I also plan to do this in the form of money and volunteering. There are plenty of organizations and causes that could use more help and if I won the lottery, I would be donating to a sizeable number of them. As long as my family has what they need, if I have anything extra, it will definitely go to helping people.
