Unemployment is becoming a reality to more and more people. Before the economy turned sour it was already an economy where many households had two working adults. There are lots of articles on what to do if one becomes unemployed, but what do you do if your spouse becomes unemployed? The sudden unemployment of a spouse could strain a relationship and make a household hard to stay together. Unemployment is not a joy for the person who is unemployed and it is not great news to the family financially. However, there are some tips and advice to help a couple survive a spouse’s unemployment.
Tip One: Look at the Positives
My wife is unemployed and I have experienced times of unemployment myself. It is not a fun thing to endure professionally. There are a lot of negatives with unemployment and those negatives tend to attack the unemployed self esteem. However, believe it or not there are some positives which have come out from my wife’s unemployment. She has been able to spend more time with are children a 13 year old boy and 3 year old girl. She has been able to attend the needs of a child going through the adolescent years. She has also been able to spend precious time with our daughter who is going through those precious development years. The time she spends with the children is a blessing. It also saves us the cost of daycare while she is unemployed. Concentrating on the positives help keeps the spirits higher and her self esteem higher.
Tip Two: Tighten the Budget and Make sure to file for unemployment
Make sure your spouse files for unemployment so there is some income coming in. Tighten the budget as unemployment payments are not as much as the paychecks used to be. This is especially true in my situation where my wife was making more money than me.
Tip Three: Work Together
When I hear about a job fair or come across a job that sounds like it might be of interest to my spouse I let her know. Since, she is not working and is home with the kids she doesn’t always here about things as much as I do commuting to work. Some of my wife’s best leads so far have come through this manner. After all you and your spouse are on the same team. It is also a way to let them know that you are thinking about them and on their side.
Tip Four: Include them in Your Social Life
Make time for a date night if you can fit it in your budget. Make sure to take them to events you are invited too. When someone is unemployed they lose the social outlets they had at the workplace. This past weekend my wife and I went to a wedding. She really enjoyed seeing other people and socializing.
Tip Five: Tell Them You Love Them
Make sure you tell them you love them. It is simple, but it sometimes an easy thing to overlook. Now, more than ever they need to know they are important to you and that you love them. It is also a time of increased stress, tensions and worries. It is also a time when their self esteem is not at the highest. So, it is important to help lift their spirits and to keep the family bonds strong in difficult times. Sooner or later they will be working, the economy will improve, and you want to make it through the tough times so you can cherish the better days to come.
