What Should You Consider when Choosing a Roof Color?

by itchyfish

The color of a roof is not the first thing most people think about when the time comes for roof replacement. However the days of only black asphalt or red clay tiles are long past. You have choices and choosing a color is a decision that you will need to make. While you make your decision there are a few key things to keep in mind.

Roofs that are dark in color will absorb more heat than light colored ones. In northern climates a darker roof can be beneficial to the homeowner while in a southern environment than same dark roof will build up more interior heat and require more ventilation. A dark roof will also have a somewhat lower life expectancy in hotter areas.

While light colored roofing materials will remain cooler they will show signs of staining or mold more than their darker counterparts. If your home is surrounded by trees a darker roof would be the better choice. If you do not have large shade trees around your home and also get good sun exposure without large amounts of rainfall a lighter color in roofing materials may work well.

The next consideration is the type of home you have and also the neighborhood you live in. A Spanish style home is just not the quite same with a black shingle roof. Colonial style homes call out for red or black colored shingles. You definitely should consider the colors you like and remember that you want to be happy with your color choice for many years. A roof is not as easy to replace as curtains or throw pillows.

Keep in mind that while you can make a special order for unusual color shingles it may not be a good idea. You may like purple but if you do not live in a very eclectic area your roof most likely will fit in to your neighborhood. You may even annoy your neighbors. If you need something different try adding subtle color effects for accents. Roofing shingles with variegated color shades are available.

The cost of your shingles should also be part of your consideration when choosing a roofing color. The cost per bundle of shingles will be higher on special order items. Prices are normally consistent on standard black and grey shades. You will most likely also have to wait longer if you chose an unusual color in roofing material. If you do go with a special order color be sure to purchase more than enough extra. In the event of minor damage to some of your shingles on your roof you will want to have replacements to match the original shingles without worrying about lot color differences.
