What Should Siobhan Magnus Sing from the Shania Twain Songbook on American Idol?

by itchyfish

This week on American Idol, the Top 6 finally take on some country songs! With Shania Twain as the mentor, the contestants will get to choose from her extensive songbook. While it is going to be strange to see the guys sing some of Shania’s songs, last year proved that it can be done when Matt Giraud and Danny Gokey both sang Carrie Underwood songs very well last year. Although it would be fun to think about what songs everyone is going to sing this week, let’s just focus on one of the fan favorites – Siobhan Magnus.

Two weeks ago, I wrote about why Siobhan Magnus could be the next American Idol. One of those reasons was Song Choice and that will be important this week. Each year during country week, some contestants pick songs that are too fun to show their range or too big for their voices. With only a handful of finalists left, the song Siobhan picks this week will be one of the determining factors of whether she stays for another week or goes home.

Choice One: Man! I Feel Like a Woman!

“Man! I Feel Like a Woman” is a great, get-up-and-dance song and I think Siobhan would come out in a fun outfit and have a blast singing it. Unfortunately, the judges would blast a song choice like this because it would not show her range. Also, Simon Cowell might say that he “didn’t get it” or that it was “too safe.” It would be great to see Siobhan sing this one, but it might not be strong enough to keep her around.

Choice Two: Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?

Even though it is another upbeat song I think “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?” would actually show off a little bit of Siobhan’s range. There are parts of the song that lend to runs but there is no part that would allow her to hit the big note at the climax. This is another song that I would like to see Siobhan sing and that she would have fun with but I’d be surprised if it was her choice.

Choice Three: You’re Still the One

“You’re Still the One” is a choice that I think has a real good chance of happening when Siobhan hits the stage. It is a great country ballad and would let her show her singing ability. It is definitely a song that she could put emotion into and would be able to arrange it so that she can hit her big note at the end.

Choice Four: Honey, I’m Home

Uptempo and fun songs usually do not get a positive response from judges but this song is different. It is a cleverly written song and gets fast as the chorus approaches. Siobhan would still be able to sing it but have fun at the same time. Amy Adams had a great performance of the Dixie Chicks’ “Sin Wagon” in Season 3 but unfortunately got sent home that week.

Choice Five: From this Moment On

Shania originally did “From This Moment On” as a duet with Bryan White and it is one of her best ballads. If I had to make a prediction as to what song we would most likely hear from Siobhan Magnus on Tuesday this would be it. This song is a great ballad and has the high and low parts that will show her range. I think Siobhan could make a statement this week by performing “From This Moment On” and knocking it out.

Well, there are five songs that Siobhan could sing for Country Night on American Idol. The only thing we can do now is to tune in on Tuesday night, see if she made a great selection, put together a good arrangement and does enough to stick around for the Top 5 next week.
