I’ve been interested in dreams and their meanings from an early age. Dreams of drowning are one of the most common I have come across over years of research. Have you ever dreamed that you or a loved one is drowning? What does this mean? Dreams of drowning or other life threatening dreams, rarely mean someone is actually going to die. Like most dreams, a dream involving drowning represents the way you are feeling about your life, or that of the drowning person. The way the drowning is presented may be your clue to changes you should make. So what does drowning mean in a dream? Here are some scenarios.
You are Drowning Alone
When you are drowning in your dreams, likely, you feel out of control in real life. You are overwhelmed with your current situation. In fact, you are so overwhelmed that your troubles are figuratively drowning you. You are sinking further into debt, experiencing lack of progression or even depression. Your life is too much for you to handle alone.
Your Drowning Dream Involves Work Related Items
Long ago, I started working at a dry cleaners. Prior to my management assignment, I was responsible for tagging the clothing with identification tags. On a particularly busy week, I dreamed I was drowning in dry-cleaning tags. Dreaming you are drowning in or surrounded by work items while drowning means you are overwhelmed on the job.
You are Drowning With a Loved One
Drowning with a loved one in your dreams is psychologically devastating. What does this dream mean? Is it a premonition? Likely not. Dreaming of drowning with a loved one often means that you are not just overwhelmed. It could mean you feel someone else is being affected by your lack of competence. In other words, you are drowning and taking them down with you, or vice versa.
You are Drowning With a Co-Worker or Stranger
A dream of drowning with a co-worker means you are in this thing together. Likely you are assigned to work together and are being given more than you can handle. Drowning with a stranger, likely means you are overwhelmed and have no idea who this might impact. You are fearful that your actions will cause harm to others.
You are being Drowned by Someone / They are being Drowned by You
This one can be very frightening. Pay close attention to who is doing the drowning and who is being drowned. If you are drowning someone, likely you feel you are overwhelming them,or bringing them down. It can also mean you wish to bring them down. By the same token, when someone is drowning you, it likely means you feel they are bringing you down or wishing you ill will.
You are Drowning / No one Will or Can Save You
Now that you know what drowning dreams mean, these last four may be self explanatory. If you are drowning and no one can save you, you feel there is no hope of rescue. Not only is your life overwhelming but no one can help you with it. You must conquer your struggles on your own or die trying.
Someone Else is Drowning / You Cannot Save Them
This one is particularly devastating when it involves a loved one. Their life is spinning out of control and there is nothing you can do. Parents sometimes have this type of dream, concerning their children. This usually occurs when they feel helpless about a situation or behavior their child is struggling with. You feel powerless to help this person, or people in general.
Someone Close to You is Drowning / Someone Else Rescues Them
Here’s one that may hit your feelings of inadequacy square in the face. You are dreaming a loved one is drowning. You are a witness, but powerless to help. Someone steps in and plays hero. If this is a real person, you likely think this individual is doing more to help your loved one than you are. If a stranger is rescuing your loved one, it’s simply an indication of your own feelings of inadequacy.
Multiple People are Drowning
Dreaming about mass tragedies involving drowning is a sign that you feel the entire world, or at least, your portion of it, is out of control. If you feel responsible, likely you are drowning these people, or causing the issue. On the other hand, if you are a victim yourself, you are included among the crowd. The people you are clinging to in the dream are those you feel responsible for or those you can trust.
