Whale Wars, Season 3, Episode 8 aired on Animal Planet Friday night, as discord among the Bob Barker’s crew members got a bit nasty. And mechanical problems continue to interfere with both the Bob Barker and the Steve Irwin in their quest to stop the Japanese whalers. Season 3, Episode 8 of Whale Wars let viewers even see the remote Kerguelen Island. This is where the two Sea Shepherd boats met to transfer needed supplies and unhappy crew members.
The “I Want to Go Home” Plea Rings Out on Whale Wars, Season 3, Episode 8
Captain Bethune tries to board the Shonan Maru No. 2, but someone on the Japanese boat may have a rifle, and from there, the attempt is aborted without the sunken Ady Gil’s skipper even getting that close. Bethune thinks that the Bob Barker‘s Captain Swift is too conservative about tactics, while the latter is wary of breaking laws or risking lives. The Ady Gil’s crew has to sit around on the Bob Barker without much to do, and two of the crew members, Jason and Michael, want to be home to fulfill their commitments. But no other ships are around to ferry them home. Worse, Chief Engineer Campbell finds that the boat engine is using up too much oil, which means that the boat may have to go back to Australia anyway.
The Steve Irwin, skippered by Captain Watson, is searching for the Japanese whalers, and has enough oil for the Bob Barker, so the skipper allows for a meet up at Kerguelen Island. This infuriates Michael, who’s now sailing farther away from his goal of Australia, having to potentially wait at least a month longer to go home. Captain Swift advises that his crew deal with Michael in twos, fearing his volatility on Season 3, Episode 8 of Whale Wars.
The Bob Barker’s Speedboat is Damaged on Whale Wars, Season 3, Episode 8
Captain Watson has to decide whether to repair their broken down helicopter or not, which adds to his angst upon hearing about two unhappy crew members on the Bob Barker. Watson tells Captain Swift that he’ll take Mike, Jason, plus Captain Bethune back to Australia after the meet up in Kerguelen Island, which calms the tensions on board. Yet the pesky Shonan Maru No. 2 is following the Bob Barker, and the crew fears that the Japanese will know the locations of both boats.
The two boats finally meet, and the crews are excited, but then have to work at transferring supplies all night like fresh water and engine lube oil to the Bob Barker on Whale Wars, Season 3, Episode 8. When the weather starts getting bad, the tethers holding the speedboats are threatened. Crew members try to secure more lines to them, but one crew member gets a minor head injury. And the Bob Barker’s speedboat (the Farley) is lost to the raging sea. The next day, three crew members attempt to recover the adrift boat that’s spotted on the beach rocks. Matt breaks free of the rocks, but badly damages the propeller of the $100,000 vessel, meaning just one small boat is left for the Bob Barker.
Meanwhile, The Steve Irwin has to deal with a flooded engine. As Season 3, Episode 8 of Whale Wars ends, the Bob Barker heads back to Antarctica to a spot where the Japanese whalers are allegedly at (based on an anonymous tip), and tries to avoid the Shonan Maru No. 2. But their ideal course is right into a massive storm, which Captain Swift decides to embark on.
If it wasn’t for bad luck, the Sea Shepherds wouldn’t have any luck at all. If you need a recap of Season 3 of Whale Wars, Episode 1 is here; 3 here; 4 here; 5 here; 6 here; 7 here.
