Are you going to be traveling on I-75 near Forsyth, Georgia? If you are then you may also want to know about one of the best kept secrets in the state. The Whistle Stop Cafe and movie set of Fried Green Tomatoes is in the heart of Juliette, Georgia.
Fried Green Tomatoes is a 1991 film starring Mary Stuart Masterson as Idgy Threadgoode and Mary Louise Parker as Ruth Jamison. Central to the feel of the movie is the Whistle Stop Cafe.
Juliette is not a complete tourist trap but it comes pretty close. It’s one of those places where you almost need to know where you are going to find. Our internet directions were vague. We didn’t find one sign advertising Juliette, the Whistle Stop Cafe or Fried Green Tomatoes until we drove well past our presumed exit.
Visiting take all day. Some people will feel let down when they visit. Juliette is about 10 miles from I-75 exit 186. It does look different than it does in the movie but has the same small town feel.
If you are going to print an internet map you will need the full directions shown below. Even then please realize that there may be differences in directions between mapping programs.

We got there by taking Georgia exit 186. This is off of I-75 near Forsyth. Take Tift College Drive going east. This takes you away from Forsyth and toward Juliette. Somewhere along the way this turns into Juliette Road. (Don’t expect an immediate sign to tell you that either.)
Go approximately 8 miles you will cross GA Hwy. 87. Keep going about 1 and a half miles. The community of Juliette is ahead on the right. There is a sign to direct you. We went just down the street and found plenty of parking.
The community looks like a slice of old town Americana. Don’t expect it to appear like it did in the movie Fried Green Tomatoes. Juliette, Georgia is much more a community than a town and is much smaller than it appeared in the movie. I was impressed that such a film could be shot in such a small area. The entire community is only about 4-5 blocks long.
Phoning ahead to confirm the hours of the Whistle Stop Cafe had been suggested at the Rest Area. Since this was an added stop to our trip we didn’t call ahead. Guess what? The Whistle Stop Cafe closed at 3:00. Our arrival time was 3:10. We were able to take photos on the front porch of the cafe but that was all.
Be careful as you step onto the porch at the Whistle Stop Cafe. I was shocked to find that the porch boards seemed to be soft and unstable. To me, it seemed that the owners need to replace the boards very soon. Visitors need to watch their steps.
One of the best things about visiting was being able to talk with one of the locals. He gave me a few tips such as to not arrive during lunch hour. According to him the place can get busy and wait times can run between 30 minutes to an hour. He reported to me that the food is good and to expect chips with the sandwiches. He also said that reservations can be made by email (a tip I’ll definitely remember for next time!)
He also told me something else that surprised me. Fried Green Tomatoes is only one of two movies that were filmed in Juliette. The community is also the movie set of a rated “R” 1985 movie called A Killing Affair. That was interesting and there was not one sign about this anywhere.
In Fried Green Tomatoes honey takes on special significance. Look for a shop named The Honeycomb Store on the left as you come into the community. Here, you can find an assortment honey related items to take home.
Look for honey candles, beeswax, jars of honey, honey pollen and products by Bert’s Bees. You can also buy Nehi sodas, pick up a DVD of the movie Fried Green Tomatoes or a buy copy of Fannie Flagg’s Original Whistle Stop Cafe Cookbook.
The store owners were friendly and fun. The wife kindly took the group shot of us that you see with this article. Her husband kept us laughing so much that it was hard for her to get the photo!
Further down the row you’ll find a coffee and ice cream shop called the Riverview Cafe. They had a taste tempting menu that included breakfast and lunch.
We spent a fun 2 hours in Juliette, Georgia. This seemed to be an appropriate amount of time. Since this is the movie set of Fried Green Tomatoes it may be worth lengthening your visit to eat at the Whistle Stop Cafe.
