Over the years, Ellen Degeneres has danced her way into the living rooms and hearts of millions via her popular syndicated talk show “The Ellen Degeneres Show.” On Thursday evening’s “So You Think You Can Dance” Season 7 finale, the famed comedian danced her way across the stage in a hip hop routine with Season 4 all-star Stephen “Twitch” Boss, further endearing herself to even more people. And if you’re thinking that the Emmy-winner was on “So You Think You Can Dance” to simply be funny, think again. She proved that, under all that goofy charisma, she really does have a few dance skills.
“So You Think You Can Dance” host Cat Deeley kept hinting that a “dance legend” would perform before the night was done. With just minutes to go before announcing the winner of Season 7, after nearly two hours of amazing dance routines culled from a season of outstanding performances and several excellent guest appearances, Deeley said it was time to introduce the final act. She was beside herself with excitement as she set up the number by introducing a clip of the original routine performed by Twitch and Alex Wong. Wong was subsequently injured (although he did perform in the finale’s opening, albeit chair-bound) and had to drop out of the competition. In order to do the routine, “So You Think You Can Dance” needed a replacement dancer, a stand-in.
Deeley told the audience to “prepare for a genuine dance superstar” and ran off stage, leaving Twitch standing beside a chair, a chaise lounge, and a upright door prop trailing to his right. There was a knock. Twitch opened the door. Ellen Degeneres swung in, hanging on the door itself. She stepped off to uproarious applause.
Degeneres proved that she’s not just a person who loves to dance, something she often professes. She actually can dance. Although it seemed as if Twitch pulled some of his moves — a testament to his inestimable dance skills — to make his partner look that much better, the 52-year-old comedian held her own.
The remarkable performance would not have been complete if Ellen and company hadn’t incorporated something amusing. At the point where the song by Lil Jon and LMFAO (“Outta Your Mind”) blasts “Focus!”, a series of slapstick “miscues” took place, including an “accidental” slap to the face and a back-kick to the groin.
DeGeneres told Cat Deeley afterward that the idea for doing the routine came about after Wong had become injured and she thought she would approach the “So You Think You Can Dance” producers with the idea as a tribute. “As a joke,” she explained, “I said this would be fun to do.”
And it was fun to watch as well, a fitting final performance before announcing the Season 7 winner. And the surprises kept coming. Much-favored farm boy Kent Boyd had to settle for second place as 18-year-old Lauren Froderman was named America’s Favorite Dancer.
Ellen Degeneres fans might beg to differ…
