It can certainly be said that the Victoria’s Secret Fall preview collection is eye catching. Victoria’s Secret says “Mix it. Mismatch it. The season’s new options are endless. Consider your closet warned… fashion just got fun again.” However looking at the range the question that begs to be asked is who exactly will be having fun?
Although there are several trends reinvented from decades past, the clothing only looks to be aimed at a very young audience with a particular body shape. Many of the items are likely to only suit those under 30, the very daring, and/ or women in spectacular body shape. The average American woman may be feeling somewhat left out of the fun.
For example, take basics like the stretch tee dress or stretchy cotton mini skirt. Although classic in shape, they are very body conscious with a slinky fit and ultra-short hemlines. These styles will look good on long and lean boyish figure types, but the result might not be as pretty on a size large pear shaped lady.
Admittedly Victoria’s Secret does typically have a youthful, trendy outlook, but in the past there has typically been a good range of silhouettes that allow for different body shapes and decades on the clock. However continuing to peruse the range reveals very little that might not be misconstrued as downright distasteful if worn by the wrong age group or body shape.
Take the sequin corset bra top, it’s an underwire cropped length top that looks more like a piece of lingerie than a top. Worn outside the parameters of the bedroom, or a dance performance this top is likely to get you heckled. Even if this one was layered under a jacket the cut at the bust looks like it would still warrant a good deal of attention. There’s no surprise that this one has already been reduced in price!
The range continues with cropped length tops, so be prepared to show off your stomach. So far the dresses are mostly strapless or…strapless and there are shorts so cheeky that pockets hang out the bottom of hems.
The stylish and creative dresser may find ways to work many of the pieces into a more suitable everyday look. Perhaps by layering, or employing the rules of only showing skin in one area at a time. I would also be amiss if I failed to mention that there are some more classic and stylishly feminine items on offer. Such as new colors in the French cuff shirt, wide leg linen pants, a pretty silk ruffled blouse and several tunic length tees.
The yoga range has been updated with the Yoga skirted foldover pant, quite a fun feminine touch, but ladies with thighs beware the skirt appears to sit right through the fullest point on the legs. The yoga foldover pant has lots of cute new waistband prints like polka dots, blue cheetah and pink graffiti print.
Now perhaps I’ve just turned into a prude in my 28th year, but personally I’m hoping the full fall collection will offer more variety that caters to lots of different women.
