Neighboring the Veterans Memorial Park, Uptown Glassworks is eyecatching to passerbys heading southbound on the oneway section of Main Avenue. Here, visitors can find glassblowing at its finest. Conveniently located minutes from Interstate 405, Rainier Avenue, and Maple Valley Highway, residents of south Seattle, Renton, Newcastle, Kent, Enumclaw and Auburn have found a creative oasis.
A small parking lot is located next to the business, and street parking is available as well. This business which is located in a bright white, brick building that was built in 1902 screams elegance. An arrow shape over the entry way is unique, and immediately draws attention to the name, and business that was started 16 years ago. A vibrant array of glass items are attractively propped in the window as if summoning you.
Upon entry, you will find you have walked in to one of the largest hand-blown glass galleries in the Pacific Northwest. Open and airy throughout, your eyes will rest upon a haven of bright, creatively designed pieces placed strategically upon shelving around the room. This room which can accomodate up to 80 people in a party, presents work from more than 90 artists locally and regionally. With two full time glass blowers on hand, visitors will find after examining the pieces that almost any type of glasswork can be created.
Many opportunites to obtain knowledge and experience are available, and glassblowers of all ages have walked through the doors creating various objects.The popular Blow Your Own program is available. This provides visitors with the opportunity to learn the methods of glass-blowing. Cost for this program averages($59-$99.)Visitors can watch live glassblowing and lampworking as well. Private glassblowing instruction is available. An additional sample class is beading. This provides individuals with an opporunity to put beads together while creating an artpiece sans the heat. Cost for this class ranges from ($39-$59.)
The facility is available for rent to host a corporate event, birthday party, classroom project… For those that have a special project they are working on, equipment is available for rent.
With the recent sale of the business by former owner Paul Sullivan, and the new acquisition by three new investors, many fun filled events are planned to encourage introduction to glassblowing and the continual flow of ones creative juices in this arena.
