Did you know that congress thinks that the issue with unemployment is getting better? Did you know that they have continued to drag their heels when it has come to granting extensions or much needed extra tiers? You probably did know the last one. As a member of the unemployed world, I have crossed my fingers every time they have reached a new deadline in hopes of extensions being added. I like many Americans watch and wait for the congress to vote to pass the next extension.
In April, my husband hit 99 weeks. Many other people have as well. Many companies are not hiring right now. My husband and I both send out resumes and hope that one day soon one of us will get a job, so we do not end up losing everything. Yet as of this time, neither of us have. We have fought to keep from losing the slight amount of hope that we have, but it is turning into a losing battle. Now we are hearing that congress thinks that we are getting more available work. My sentiments to congress is look around, how many people have to go homeless before you open your eyes. Congress is sending $39,000,000,000 over to bail out Greece from their recession, yet complain about the $9,000,000 that impacted the $12,000,000,000,000 national deficit.
People are going without the basic necessities it takes to survive here stateside, yet the money that could be going to fixing the problem with the economy here is being budgeted to g to other countries and help them out of their financial difficulties. Congress complains that if they pay unemployment the recipients will not want to work. Newsflash: the maximum that is paid by unemployment does not even begin to compare to what our wages were when we were working. I would love to see our Congressional Leaders try to survive on $12,000 per year. As a matter of fact, I would love to see them have to jump through the same hoops as their voters have had to jump through in order to be able to have the extensions and the few tiers that have been added.
Unemployment rates here in Florida alone are at 12.8 percent. That percentage is nothing in comparison with the sheer number of people in the US that are without a job at the time being. I write this today to let the world have a clear look at how a country is being run into the ground by it’s selected leaders. I am not saying that all of the congress members are against adding tiers or extensions, just that there are not enough of the good ones left. If they think that we are not willing to work for the money that we do receive from unemployment I suggest that they set up a volunteer system where we log 30 hours per week of volunteering until the time that we have a job in order to continue to receive benefits.
Most likely, there will be no more tiers added. Most likely the homeless rate in the US will be skyrocketing in the near future. More companies will send jobs overseas, congress will send money overseas and the American people will continue to be overlooked. I may even be included in that number in a month from now, if congress does not step up to the plate and do the right thing. Only time will tell. I just urge congress members to do the right thing and take care of the citizens who have granted them the opportunity to lead this great nation.
