The Unemployment Extension 2010 Bill is due to pass tomorrow with the newest Senator being sworn in and casting his vote. The seat vacated by the death of Senator Byrd will be filled by Carte Goodwin , according to the Washington Post. Goodwin’s vote will be the 60th vote that is needed to pass the Unemployment Extension 2010 Bill.
Barring any changes from the Senator’s, this bill should pass this time. It has been too long in a stalemate in the Senate for the millions of unemployed who are struggling to pay their bills. Goodwin will be sworn in Tuesday afternoon and the Unemployment Extension 2010 Bill vote is immediately following.
When the country’s big business were going under, such as the insurance and automobile companies, the government spared little time “fixing” the problem with billions of dollars. The same held true with the banking problems. Unfortunately it is the individual American citizen that has been forgotten when it comes to getting the help or “bailing them out”.
Unemployment compensation is not enough money to keep the average person from looking for employment. Most are continuing their job searchs because of the low rate of pay the benefits offer from the unemployment insurance. It is enough in most states to just put food on the table, but it will not cover the complete expenses of daily living such as housing and utilities.
Each State pays different weekly benefits and they vary greatly. In Mississippi the the most anyone can collect is $230 in unemployment compensation. Compare that to Massachusetts which pays $942 as its highest payment. That is over a $600 dollar difference for a weekly check for the same person in the same job. The figures are according to the statistics listed on Unemployment Guide.
It would just depend on the state that you live in and what your pay rate was during the qualifying time that unemployment uses to calculate the payments. Although it is more expensive to live in Massachusetts than it is to live in Mississippi, this is still a very large difference. After the $942 in Massachusetts, the high end for states falls around the $600 range, this is where Connecticut falls.
Connecticut’s highest payment for unemployment compensation is $594. Considering Massachusetts and Connecticut not only share borders, but they also share the same high cost of living, it is hard to understand how it could differ this much between the two states. The 900+ figure that Massachusetts offers as their highest paying unemployment compensation stands alone because it is about $300 dollars more than any other state, so it is in a league of its own.
