Uncle Sam Toasted Whole-Wheat Flakes & Flaxseed may sound like your grandmother’s old cereal – but it tastes toasty and delicious – especially with slivers of strawberries and banana added to the bowl.
Uncle Sam’s has been around since 1908 — quite a few years before I was born. Yet, I never tried it until my recent taste-test for this Uncle Sam Toasted Whole-Wheat Flakes & Flaxseed Review.
I’ve been on the search for some of the best-tasting high fiber cereals. And this high-fiber cereal was a pleasant surprise.
Other high-fiber cereals I like include the sprouted-grain Ezekiel cereal. For people who are on a gluten-free diet, opt instead for hot Buckwheat, which is a fruit not really a grain.
A 100 percent whole grain that definitely includes wheat, Uncle Sam’s is obviously not a wheat-free or gluten-free cereal. But if you can tolerate gluten, it’s a great choice. Here’s what you need to know about Uncle Sam, one of the best high-fiber cereals:
No. 1: Reason Uncle Sam is one of the best high-fiber cereals: It has 10 grams of fiber in 3/4 cup. That includes 2 grams of soluble and 8 grams insoluble fiber. That’s a lot of fiber!
No. 2: Reason Uncle Sam is one of the best high-fiber cereals: Uncle Sam has 190 calories, 7 grams of protein and vitamins and minerals including Calcium, Thiamin, Niacin, Magnesium, Iron, Vitamin C, Riboflavin and Phosphorus.
No. 3: Reason Uncle Sam is one of the best high-fiber cereals: Flaxseed is a heart-healthy fat. Flaxseed found in Uncle Sam high-fiber cereal is one of the best sources of plant omega-3 fatty acids.
No. 4: Reason Uncle Sam is one of the best high-fiber cereals: Uncle Sam is one of the best low-sugar cereals on the market. It has only 1 gram of sugar per serving which is ideal for people on low-sugar diets and diabetics who pay attention to the Glycemic value of a food. Since it is low glycemic, Uncle Sam won’t cause a rapid spike in blood sugar that will make you hungry.
No. 5: Reason Uncle Sam is one of the best high-fiber cereals: It’s a great weight-loss aid. Try sprinkling the cereal on yogurt or in salads. I used Uncle Sam as a breading for chicken parmesan to add more fiber to the dish. I also experimented using it in turkey meatloaf – which worked great. It’s one of the best cereals for a diet.
For breakfast, I enjoyed the taste and texture of the Uncle Sam, but I am not a fan of plain cereal so I experimented with blueberries, strawberries and bananas. I ate my Uncle Sam with rice milk one day and also with soy milk. Uncle Sam is a product of U. S. Mills.
Bottom line for my Uncle Sam cereal review: Thumbs up.
