UFC 116 will be headlined by Brock Lesnar versus Shane Carwin but the undercard may have some better betting opportunities. Whenever betting boxing or MMA, it is always best to find a solid underdog to get behind. Carwin at +135 against Lesnar could be a little tough to get behind since Lesnar is an unknown commodity heading into their UFC title bout.

UFC Heavyweight Title Fight Shane Carwin +135 vs Brock Lesnar -155
Shane Carwin enters this UFC title bout with a 12-0 record but has not been tested seriously in any of the bouts. Carwin is a fast closer that doesn’t let many of his fights ever get to the second round.Lesnar and Carwin are similar in size but Carwin has a tendency to get gassed in training, so under the the pressure of an active fight, Carwin could get over heated early.
Brock Lesnar has not fought since he defeated Frank Mir, July 13th of last year, making him a total unknown heading into the UFC title fight July 3rd. Lesnar has not had to take on anyone that is similar to him in build and weight and Carwin appears to have the power and wrestling skills to challenge a rusty Lesnar.
The fight will most likely start with a rapid pace, that is unusual for a heavyweight battle. Lesnar will be looking to get the fight to the ground but Carwin will resist, although Carwin is a wrestler also and could handle himself on the ground. Lesnar will make it a goal to force Carwin to use a lot of energy and let the fight get into the later rounds. The fight will probably be over before the end of the second round. Take Carwin at +135 as the underdog but don’t make much of a play since Lesnar could be in better shape than many expect.
Yoshihiro Akiyama +135 vs Wanderlei Silva -155
Wanderlei Silva is growing old before our eyes in the last five UFC bouts and this could be his last UFC fight if he takes another devastating knockout. Silva’s goal when he fights is to entertain the fans but he needs to protect himself better as he gets older.
Yoshihiro Akiyama is an unknown quantity in the UFC. Akiyama has a judo background and is 13-1 in Mixed Martial Arts. Akiyama has the heart and ability to make this the fight of the night with Silva. With Silva’a all out aggressive style, Akiyama may be able to get inside on the powerful Silva. Take Yoshihiro Akiyama +135 to pull a very mild upset in this UFC bout.
Stephan Bonner +190 vs Kryzstof Soszynski -220
Stephan Bonner has disappointed in his recent bouts, losing his last three. The competition he faced in Jon Jones and Mark Coleman were more experienced and his bout with Kryzstof Soszynski is a rematch of their fight that was stopped due to a vicious cut to Bonner.
Bonner has a special place in MMA history since his first official UFC bout to conclude the first season of The Ultimate Fighter. In that fight Forrest Griffin and Bonner battled in a three round epic fight that made UFC history. Bonner has never been able to catch fire in UFC and Dana White may have to finally acknowledge Bonner just can’t get over the hump. Take Kryzstof Soszynski -220 but only use him in a parlay.
Chris Tuchscherer +250 vs Brendan Schaub -300
Brandan Schaub is a monster, who could someday be in line for a titles fight against the winner of the UFC Heavyweight title fight. Schaub suffered an embarrassing loss to Big Country Roy Nelson and since that happened, his chin will be questioned until he can prove otherwise.
Chris Tuchscherer is also a big man on this card and this fight is his big chance to make his mark. Tuscherer enters his third UFC bout as a decided underdog but he does present a challenge to Schaub. Tuchscherer is an above average wrestler and he does not get gassed as easily as most heavyweights.
Tuchscherer has 15 pounds walking around weight on Schaub and if there is a 15 pound discrepancy at the weigh in, Tuchscherer will be able to use his weight to push Schaub around. Take Chris Tuchscherer as the +250 underdog and cross your fingers.
Kendall Grove +150 vs Goran Reljic -170
Kendall Grove has made a history of surprising the fans and the odds makers. On the other side of the UFC Octagon Goran Reljic is a no nonsense fighter that is adept in all areas of MMA. Look for Kendall Grove to be active early in this bout and if Reljic isn’t careful, Grove could steal two round and force Reljic into a must win situation in the third round. Take Kendall Grove +150 to win this UFC bout.
