“Wanna get pizza tonight?”
When the general population hears the phrase, they mostly think big chain pizza stores like Domino’s, Papa John’s, or Pizza Hut.
In the city of Irvine, there live a lot of college students. And there is a general consensus among college students that we are really poor.
Alas, the lack of money usually indicates that there is a lack of mobility, as well. Many people do not have cars and cannot drive the few miles to the nearest Domino’s, or Papa John’s.
However, those living at a walking distance from the UCI campus are in luck. There are three not-too-shabby pizza parlors just waiting to be tried. The first two are pizza parlors in the plaza immediately next to campus, while the last is a 20-30 minute walk away.
ZPizza is a quaint pizza parlor that doesn’t make your pizza until it’s been ordered. Granted, it does take a while for you to get your pizza, but not to worry. There is a TV for your viewing pleasure inside while you wait. Also, the pizza is certainly worth the wait. The ingredients are fresh and delicious, and you can really taste the difference between a pizza that has been sitting in the box for some time versus a freshly-made masterpiece. A large 16″ pizza at ZPizza with two toppings can feed 4-6 people and only costs $16.
The second pizza parlor in the University Town Center plaza next to the UCI campus is tucked into a tiny little corner of the plaza. Called Ray’s Pizza, this parlor makes their pizza from tap water shipped from New York. There’s just something about the water that makes the pizza so much tastier, and you can really taste the difference. Alas, the pizzas at Ray’s are a bit more expensive (naturally): an 18″ with one topping costs approximately $20. Similarly to ZPizza, Ray’s Pizza doesn’t make your pizza until it’s ordered, and it can take some time for you to get your food.
The last pizza parlor is a bit of a walk. Called Gina’s Pizza and Pastaria, it is located farther down Campus Dr., heading towards Culver. Gina’s Pizza shares a plaza with Albertson’s and Del Taco and is about an half an hour’s walk to get to from the UCI campus. This pizza parlor serves more than just pizza, with pasta, sandwiches, and appetizers ranging from flatbread to sweet potato fries. The pizzas and food here are delicious, but also the most expensive out of the three. An 18″ pizza with two toppings costs approximately $22, and all of the other offerings on the menu are a bit pricey as well. However, if you are willing to walk a bit far and pay a little bit more, then Gina’s Pizza is the place to go.
Hungry and craving pizza? Don’t want to order for delivery and have to pay the delivery fee and tip the driver? Then head down to Irvine, where there’s three small gems just waiting to be discovered: ZPizza, Ray’s Pizza, and Gina’s Pizza and Pastaria.
