The Twilight series has give us Edward Cullen, who is the epitome of the perfect man in these movies. His qualities have women of all ages standing in line overnight to get in and see these films on their opening days. It is not just the teenagers that cannot get enough of him, he has a large following of middle aged women too.
Edward is played by Robert Pattinson, who has made this role believable and irresistible. Although Pattinson is a big part of the Edward persona, he is not who women are falling in love with. It is the fictional character of Edward Cullen that the ladies are longing to know.
What makes Edward Cullen so much different than other movie characters that have been played by movie stars? The difference is the women usually fall in love with Cary Grant, George Clooney, or Johnny Depp, the actual men and not the characters that they play.
Edward Cullen is different; sure the young girls are looking at Robert Pattinson as an idol and love interest, but not the majority of the adult women. Their infatuation is with Edward the character, much more so than the actor that plays him.
Although you can argue that the movie appeals to women who are in their 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s because it takes them back to their magical teenage years, as a story in the NY Daily News suggests, but I think it goes a little deeper than nostalgia.
Edward Cullen has lived for centuries; he possesses the romance and distinguished gentlemen quality that has come down through the ages. Today’s men are a product of this era. Edward is a product of many lifetimes in which he has been able to modernize without losing any of the qualities he collected through the ages.
These are the qualities that women find intriguing, and quite frankly want in a man. He has learned to be sensitive, caring and genuine, which is something you may find in an older man after he has spent decades learning life’s lessons. Edward contains all of this and more.
His romanticism shines through in the way he holds his love interest, Bella, in such high regard. We cannot imagine Edward yelling out to Bella, “pop this pimple on my back”, like the Al Bundy’s of the world. We can’t even image Edward ever asking Bella to bring him a beer, (or in this case, a can of beef blood) like many of us experience on weekends that are spent with out football husbands and boyfriends. Edward is past all of the macho proving mannerisms.
Edward loves to listen to romantic classical music, as we see the first time Bella visits his room. We get a glimpse into his sophistication during that scene. He has the wisdom of a man that has lived many lifetimes and has found that there is so much more to being a man than what is traditional practiced by men today.
He protects Bella and keeps her safe, but most of all a true adoring love comes through from Edward, one that is unconditional. It has nothing to do with sex, it is the longing to connect with another soul that women find appealing in Edward Cullen. He really is the perfect man.
Although he appears in the body of a 17 year old in the movies, you soon forget that Edward has an age because of his behaviors and actions. He is ageless and this is what makes him the object of affection for women of all ages.
Robert Pattinson does an excellent job of bringing the character of Edward Cullen to the screen. He might even do this too well because for the first time that I can ever remember, women are falling in love with the character he is playing, more so than the actor himself!
