What do I look forward to most about each Twilight movie? Honestly, it’s seeing which Muse song will be featured on the soundtrack! Anyway, as fans line up to see the latest installment in the Twilight Saga, I take a look at what differences there are between the books and movies of Twilight and New Moon and why I think the books are better. I understand that it’s impossible to make the movie follow the book to a tee or else the movie would be like 6 hours long. However, there were some things that I thought could have been either changed or added to the movies to make them more closely resemble the books that we have all come to love.
For me, Twilight was the weaker of the two movies produced so far. If I looked at the film just as a standalone movie and nothing more, it wasn’t that bad at all. But, when comparing it to the book, it was way off the mark. I know that movies are rarely as good as the books (and even more rare when they’re better like Stardust in my opinion) but come on…this was not even close. During the opening sequences of the movie, it was similar to the book. However; the more the movie played on, the more differences appeared between Twilight the movie and Twilight the book.
What Should be Changed in the Movie
The first movie scene I think should be changed is the “meadow” scene. This scene proves to be a crucial one in the Twilight Saga. It’s where Bella sees Edward in the sunlight for the first time. In the book, the meadow is a secret, sacred place; whereas, the movie it wasn’t explained how this was the place Edward could go and not have to hide who he was. In the book, Bella and Edward have a conversation about how each one shouldn’t be with the other, but now they are at the point that they don’t want to be without the other’s company. The movie version of this scene was too short and didn’t elaborate on how important and special this scene was in the book and to the rest of the Twilight Saga.
The other scene that should be changed in the movie is at the end when Jacob comes out of the woods to tell Bella that his family will be watching her. In the book, Jacob shows up to the prom and asks Bella to dance while he relays his family’s warning. Having Jacob come out of the woods in the movie is giving a false impression to the viewers. My co-worker had seen the movie, but didn’t read the books yet. She had an idea of the whole vampire and werewolf thing so when she saw this scene in the movie she said that Jacob is a werewolf. Actually, he’s not a werewolf in the book or the movie yet and doesn’t become one until New Moon. I’m sure that the director knew this, but decided to change the scene to heighten the suspense of the whole werewolf thing.
What Should be Added to the Movie
The scene that I was hoping to see in the Twilight movie was the one where Edward carries Bella to the nurse’s office after she nearly faints from the sight and smell of blood. I thought this scene was funny and it also adds another moment that Bella and Edward are together. While reading the book, you can see how the relationship between Edward and Bella progressed over a period of time. In the movie, they didn’t seem to have as many of those moments, so the close relationship they developed seemed sudden and forced. In the book, Edward skips Science class because they will be collecting blood samples. During that class, Bella sees blood and feels faint, so Mike (who really likes Bella) figures that he will be her knight in shining armor (not sunlight). As he tries to help her to the nurse’s office, Edward comes along and takes over. The exchange proves humorous as Mike realizes he’s fighting a losing battle. At the nurse’s office, Edward is intrigued when Bella explains that she can smell blood. I was really looking forward to watching this scene unfold on screen.
Another scene I was hoping to see in the movie was Edward and Bella’s drive on the way to the prom. In the book, Bella thinks that Edward made her dress up because he was going to convert her into a vampire. When Bella realizes that Edward is actually taking her to the prom, she gets upset and explains what she thought his intentions were. In the movie, there is no mention of her inner feelings and therefore it is assumed that Bella knew all along they were going to the prom. I think this part of the book is significant because it shows how much Bella desires to be with Edward forever.
The main thing that I liked about the movie version of New Moon is that it more closely followed the book than the first movie did with Twilight. At least when I watched the movie for the first time, I only noticed subtle differences like when Bella asks the Cullens to vote on whether they want her to become a part of their family. In the movie, Bella suggests to Edward in the car that they should wait until she graduates before she is converted so it will be easier on Charlie. In the book; however, it is Edward who makes this suggestion.
What Should be Changed in the Movie
The first scene I would change is when Jacob, Mike, and Bella go to the movie theater. In the book, Mike gets sick, so Jacob and Bella drive him home. While in the car, Bella notices that Jacob is feeling feverish. Jacob’s father later tells Bella that Jacob is sick, but we later discover that he was going through the transformation of becoming a werewolf. Conversely, in the film, Jacob threatens Mike inside the movie theater and that is when Bella notices Jacob is burning up. Then Jacob walks out of the theater, leaving Bella and Mike by themselves. Again, this is something minor, but at this point Jacob’s mood swings haven’t begun yet in the book.
The ending sequences of the book and movie also turn out to be different. Let’s talk about the “engagement” scene. In the book, Edward is in Bella’s room and tells her that he will convert her on one condition; she has to marry him first. At first Bella thought that Edward was joking with her. Then Bella goes on to explain that she doesn’t believe in marriage because she sees what happened to her mother and father. Hollywood; however, has to make sure that we’re on the edge of our seat. So, the film shows Jacob and Edward’s conversation first. Then, when Jacob walks away, Edward asks Bella to marry him and before she says anything the screen goes black.
What Should be Added to the Movie
In the book on Bella’s birthday, Edward gives her a CD that has the song he played for her on the piano. After Edward leaves Bella, everything that was given to her by the Cullens is gone, including the CD. This part was not in the movie. The CD is important to the story because Edward promised not to buy her anything, so he made it. I thought to myself “how dare Edward take that away from her?” It’s her song!
Another scene that should have been included in the movie, was when Jacob allows Charlie to see the motorcycle that Bella’s been riding. Jacob was hoping that Charlie would punish Bella and not allow her to see Edward. Jacob didn’t realize that Charlie already grounded her. The reason this should have been added is because it shows how far Jacob will go to prevent Bella from seeing Edward; he is willing to betray his friend.
Conclusion:Now that the second movie has proven itself to be better than the first movie, I hope Eclipse will prove the same. I’m excited to see the movie even though I know that it won’t be as good as the book. I thought that the third book was hilarious and I hope they don’t sacrifice its humor by trying to make the movie too dramatic.
