Most Americans, especially those who watch the news, are highly aware of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the largest oil spill throughout United States history. There have been many things explained by the news media since its occurrence in April, 2010. What stood out the most for me is how the oil company BP plc seems to be taking all of the heat for this oil spill even though Transocean Ltd was jointly involved with the Deepwater Horizon, a semi-submersible offshore drilling rig that was located in the Gulf of Mexico. I wanted to know why the news media was not including Transocean Ltd in the negative reviews about what is going on in the Gulf of Mexico. I wanted to know why Transocean Ltd was receiving what looked to this American as special treatment as the news media ceased mentioning Transocean Ltd in their Deepwater Horizon oil spill reports. Did a little investigating on my own, compliments of the Internet, and found out why Transocean Ltd is not something the American news media would regard news worthy when regarding an environmental disaster like the largest oil spill to reach United States soil.
Transocean Ltd was the company that leased the Deepwater Horizon to BP plc (originally known as British Petroleum). BP plc is based in London, England and regarded as a British-based entity. Transocean Ltd did have their own company’s crew members working side by side BP plc’s on the Deepwater Horizon offshore oil rig. According to the Transocean Ltd official website, Transocean Ltd lost some of their crew members in the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling rig explosion on April 20, 2010. May 25, 2010, Transocean Ltd “honored the 11 missing crew members in a memorial service in Jackson, Mississippi, and continue to support the families of those lost and those who survived.” Transocean Ltd has further been actively (with all of its emergency oil spill available resources) assisting BP plc with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill clean up since its occurrence. This international company is also holding its own internal investigation into the cause of the Deepwater Horizon offshore oil rig explosion to find out exactly what caused it and determine preventative measures against future similar oil rig disasters. Transocean Ltd is determined and dedicated to not having another occurrence like the Deepwater Horizon and the oil spill that came after. Transocean Ltd regards itself as one of the most safety and environmentally conscious businesses in its field.
Who is Transocean Ltd? According to Transocean Ltd’s official website, this large international company humbly began as the Danciger Oil and Refining Company of Louisiana, founded in 1919. In 1929, Danciger Oil and Refining Company purchased their first oil rig. This was an American company that had grand visions for its future and was a part of the American Oil Industry’s history. In 1950, Danciger Oil and Refining Company was purchased by Southern Production Company, a subsidiary of Southern National Gas. 1953, Southern Production Company forms The Offshore Company and merges The Offshore Company with Danciger drilling operations. 1954, The Offshore Company develops and places in the United States Gulf of Mexico the first offshore jackup oil drilling rig. This means drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico is about 56 years old, something the news media forgot to mention in their newscasts. 1963, The Offshore Company expands its operations to include the United Kingdom. For about 50 years American based companies have been “expanding” overseas, another thing the news media neglected to bring up in their business related reports. 1966, The Offshore Company develops and installs the first year round operating jackup oil rig in the North Sea. The company names this oil rig the Orion. Offshore drilling was common place by 1980, the news-media did not mention this during their 2010 oil spill news-reports. In 1992, The Offshore Company’s parent company Southern Natural Resources (formerly Southern National Gas) based in Birmingham, Alabama changes The Offshore Company’s name to Sonat Offshore Drilling Inc. 1993, Sonat Offshore Drilling Inc based in Houston, TX is “spinned off” from Sonat (aka Southern Natural Resources). Sonat Offshore Drilling Inc in 1996 acquires Transocean ASA of Norway, thereby creating Transocean Offshore Inc. which doubles the company’s offshore drilling fleet. 2007, Transocean Offshore Inc. merges with GlobalSanteFe Corporation making this company the world’s largest offshore driller. The company’s name becomes Transocean Ltd. Today, the headquarters of Transocean Ltd is in Vernier, Geneva, Switzerland instead of the United States of America. According to the Wikipedia website, this occurred October 2009 by Board Approval and then the Transocean Ltd headquarters was switched from Houston, TX to Switzerland. This transference of headquarters made Transocean Ltd a Swiss-based international company.
Transocean Ltd, because of its American roots and has offices within the United States borders, does have a vested interest in maintaining a positive image throughout the the United States of America as well as globally. It’s mission statement includes a safety vision (per Transocean Ltd official website). Transocean Ltd’s “Mission is to be the premier offshore drilling company providing worldwide rig-based, well-construction services to our customers through the integration of motivated people, quality equipment and innovative technology, with a particular focus on technically demanding environments.” Transocean Ltd’s “Safety Vision is: Our operations will be conducted in an incident-free workplace – all the time, everywhere.” These were created years before the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling rig explosion. Transocean Ltd takes both their Mission and Safety Vision very seriously and is known for adhering strictly to them.
Transocean Ltd’s has a unique set of Core Values that spell out the anagram “FIRST”. This company likes to be “the first” in their field and prides itself with all of the “firsts” it has created throughout oil drilling history. What does FIRST actually stand for? According to Transocean Ltd’s official website FIRST is:
“Financial Discipline: Our decisions will be made to ensure long-term growth for the benefit of employees, customers and shareholders.
Integrity and Honesty: Our actions will be conducted following the highest standard of ethics, honesty and personal integrity. This will foster and maintain trust and confidence of our employees, customers and suppliers.
Respect for Employees, Customers and Suppliers: Our employees will be developed and motivated to meet the challenges ahead. Individuality and diversity will be valued and performance recognized. We will provide our customers with unsurpassed value-added service. Our relationship with suppliers will reflect respect, understanding and sound business practice.
Safety: Personal safety and employee health is our greatest responsibility, followed by the protection of our environment and company property.
Technical Leadership: Our competitive advantage is based on continually improving our processes and finding innovative solutions to the technical challenges in meeting the needs of our customers.”
Personally, I was delighted to see “integrity and honesty”, “respect, safety and health for employees”, and “the protection of our environment” included in Transocean Ltd’s Core Values known as FIRST. This company actually does care about people, places their well-being first. This company knows what risks and environmental impact oil drilling can have on our planet. Transocean Ltd for years has been doing all it can to keep the environment free from contamination and maintain safe working conditions on its offshore oil rigs.
Transocean Ltd is out there in the Gulf of Mexico assisting any way it can with the cleaning up of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that is located in the Gulf of Mexico near the Mississippi River Delta. Transocean Ltd is there primarily to ensure the preservation of the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi River Delta including its wildlife and the fishing industry. Transocean Ltd has experts and access to resources that can precipitate the cleaning up of an oil spill. No oil drilling company foresaw how difficult this particular type of oil spill would be to cease and clean up. This oil spill is unprecedented, completely different than all others in oil drilling history. The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill was caused by drilling unconventionally with new techniques and experimental parts at a depth that would break all offshore drilling records. If Deepwater Horizon’s drilling operation had been a success, it would have been another “first” in oil drilling history. No one could foresee what happened on April 20, 2010; not even BP and Transocean Ltd.
Why is Transocean Ltd’s efforts not regarded as news worthy by the news-media? Perhaps this is due to Transocean Ltd, since the very beginning of the oil spill, has been implementing what the news media thought BP and the United States federal government should be doing. Right now, as I am writing this article, according to the Transocean Ltd official website and related links Transocean has listed, Transocean Ltd presently has offshore rigs and company onshore support working around the clock cooperatively with the States involved in cleaning up this disastrous oil spill. In spite of the news media telling us hardly anything is being done and the United States government should be doing something, Transocean Ltd is doing its best to clean up what could end up to be one of the worst environmental disasters. This American says, “Thank you Transocean Ltd for all the positives you are implementing and accomplishing in the United States Gulf of Mexico. Thank you for caring.”
