I’m a sucker for lemonade. However, I don’t like just any lemonade. I like the French sparkling version. What can I say? I have expensive tastes.
There is a brand of French lemonade carried by World Market that I love. However, because it costs about $5 a bottle, I rarely allow myself such an expensive treat.
Recently; however, I discovered that Trader Joe’s has its own sparkling lemonade. It is called French Market Sparkling Lemonade and it comes in regular, pink, or berry. My favorite is the pink.
Let’s face it. Lemonade is refreshing, especially on a hot, humid summer day. Nothing else quite delivers the punch that a good glass of lemonade does. And Trader Joe’s French Market Sparkling Pink Lemonade is the best of the best.
On the down side, this juice drink is not 100% natural as many other Trader Joe’s products are. It contains carbonated water, sugar, citric acid, natural lemon flavor, grape skin extract, arabic gum and glycerol ester of wood rosin. The latter two fall under the “questionable” category for those individuals who wish to avoid preservatives and chemicals in their food and drink.
Arabic gum contains glycoproteins and polysaccharides, which are often used to stabilize foods. Unfortunately, it is also used in cosmetics, glue, ink and paint; products you wouldn’t like to equate with your food.
In its defense, arabic gum is made from the sap of the acacia tree. It is considered a “natural” product although some might argue the question.
Glycerol ester of wood rosin may sound horrendous but it is commonly used in lemonades as well as in many soft drinks. Sometimes referred to as ester gum, it is used as both a stabilizer and an emulsifier.
Trader Joe’s French Market Sparkling Lemonade comes in a one liter bottle, which represents 33.8 fluid ounces of liquid. There are four servings of 130 calories in each bottle.
The lemonade contains no fat or sodium. It does; however, contain a whopping 31 grams of sugar, which represents about 10% of the recommended daily value. It also contains 31 grams of cholesterol, making it a poor choice for individuals who need to watch that type of intake.
Unfortunately, this delicious juice does not contain any real nutritional value. Therefore, it might be better suited to an occasional treat than a regular one.
On the flip side, this wonderful sparkling lemonade is a great option for individuals who do not imbibe alcohol but want to give off the appearance of recreational drinking. It possesses a lovely blush pink color that seems to match its refreshing taste.
The juice retails for $2.99 at Trader’s Joe’s stores and can also be purchased online at a slightly higher cost due to shipping and handling.
This lemonade must be refrigerated after it has been opened in order to keep it refresh and safe for consumption. Additionally, since it does contain carbonation, which is put in under pressure. It should not be shaken before opening. Also, do not store the lemonade in direct sunlight or the heat could cause a negative reaction with the drink’s carbonation.
Here is my review summary:
Taste: 5 stars. This lemonade is every bit as good as the more expensive brand.
Color: 5 stars. It looks yummy and it is.
Packaging: 4 stars. A stoppered bottle, similar to that of its competition, might be more elegant. However, that would also jack up the price of the drink. A wine shaped bottle could be more elegant without changing the drink’s appearance too much.
Freshness: 5 stars. We never drink all of ours at once so we tighten the cap and refrigerate. It holds up well for about a week. Then the carbonation begins to fade.
Dietary value: 0 stars. It contains a lot of sugar and that isn’t good.
Storage: 5 stars. I like it chilled but it can be served room temperature as well.
Ease of purchase: 4 stars. Okay, you can’t buy it in just anywhere. You must shop Trader Joe’s or online. Still, it is worth the effort to search out and make the purchase.
Price: 5 stars. A $3 wine wouldn’t be very good. This is a great, nonalcoholic substitute.
Product purchase probability: 3 stars. I will definitely buy it again, just not too often.
Retailer purchase probability: 5 stars. Well Joe’s is THE place to go for the juice so chances are 100% I’ll make my purchase there.
Final rating: 4.1 stars.
5 stars – outstanding
4 stars – good
3 stars – average
2 stars – below average
