Understanding the other’s point of view is the cornerstone for better relationship. It applies at the individual level as well as countries. Nobody lives without seeing tension in some parts of the world if not within the country itself. There were times when the world itself was on the brink of another World War. Those times have slowly been distanced as the major powers are showing better understanding of others’ points of view & national interests.
The bitter rivalry between the political systems of democracy & communism has been resolved to a great extent. Russia wants to be left alone & does not bother much about ideologies. China still stands by communism but it is more a single party rule than the rigid system of thirty years ago. They have integrated better than most into world trade & reaping the advantages. Though US feels the heat of China snapping at its feet to be taken into account as an equal partner, there is a broad understanding when the push comes to a shove! It is mutual coexistence based on advantages that can be reaped by sticking together. It is win-win situation for them and also for others.
The friction between nations arises mostly due to the ego of leaders who are afraid of any change & loss of power. The general public is mostly the same but is fed hatred & fear by their leaders. Also, the culture plays a part like religion, role of women etc. Any outside influence is feared as an assault on their tradition.
As long as the leaders get to power not by democratic system, the people will suffer as they are used as pawns. A typical case is North Korea. Kim Jong Il is more worried about his dynasty than the well being of his people. They are suffering for no fault of theirs while those from the same stock South Korea are a developed country. It is clear that the majority will & welfare of the people has become subservient to those of one man! There are other countries still that are held down by the tyranny of few.
Even in the modern world of scientific advancement & thought some people are still not free to pursue their legitimate passion. As long as such oppressions continue in the name of culture & outdated systems, people will risk life & limb to break free from the clutches of brutal systems.
It is blot on our conscience that we have to look on as by-standers at the atrocities that are committed on hapless people who are born in the wrong places, maybe for no fault of theirs! So much time & resources are spent even by world leaders to cater to the whims & fancies of few. That also takes the attention away from alleviating poverty & wastage of resources.
The adage, we are our own worst enemies is truer in some countries. While some continue to suffer for no fault of theirs, the rest are reduced as by-standers. We are still far away from a fair world!
