With hundreds of games available on Xbox Live’s Indie Game channel it can be tough to find the really great games. Since launching there have been dozens of zombie themed Indie Games. However, there have only been a few that really stand out. These are Twin Blades, I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1, Zombie Estate and Newton vs The Horde.
With some of the best graphics on Xbox Live Indie Games this $5 title is gorgeous with its manga-like graphical style. You play as a nun who clearing the city of evil zombies in Twin Blades. You start with a simple pistol and sickle. As you progress through the levels you can level up your abilities, health and weapons. There are some very unique bosses and a sound track that fits the atmosphere perfectly. It is a great game to play in short bursts as it can get a little repetitive if you play for hours on end.
I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1
This top-down twin-stick shooter is just $1 and has a great original soundtrack. Each game is only around 15 minutes long, but the high score leaderboards will keep you going back for more. There are various power-ups scattered across the screen that give you ninja stars, plasma shots, lasers and rockets. The enemies just keep coming and you just have to stay alive. Assuming you can control your laughing at the song long enough to fight the zombies the game play is a lot of fun.
With a unique retro 3D world filled with 2D sprites you have 25 waves of zombies to destroy. With 4 player local co-op support this $1 title is terrific to play with some friends. You start with a standard rifle, and you can buy more weapons as the waves progress. The later weapons in the game are especially destructive and fulfilling to use. The only small complaint is that there is no save system. If you stop playing partway through the waves when you come back the next time you have to start at wave one again. Even with that issue Zombie Estate is still a lot of fun and worth the dollar it cost.
Newton vs The Horde
Using physics to build zombie killing traps is the objective in Newton vs The Horde. While the learning curve is a little higher than one would expect there is a helpful tutorial in this $1 game. You have springs, ropes, elastic and more to setup your traps. There is an Old Spice promotion tied in with the game, but given the strange world the game takes place in it is not that distracting. If you are looking for something other than a shooter Newton vs The Horde is a worth checking out.
