Books are the best way to pass on great stories. However, sometimes they get lost in the shelves of a library and the stories are never renewed. I have tracked down three of those “lost” books that need to be made into movies. These are my three favorite science fiction books that I believe should be made into Hollywood films.
The first of my favorites is an eighties classic called Ender’s Game written by Orson Scott Card. Ender’s Game is a science fiction based book about the life of a boy named Ender. Ender must face a lifetime of war, as earth now grooms children to be soldiers to fight off the alien Buggers. As Ender grew up in the shadow of his two siblings he learned about the world he lived in, and soon realized his schools “games” were making him into a warrior. Once he encounters the Buggers, after being tricked into fighting them by his own people he and his sister travel to a new colony where their eyes are opened. Although I will not give away the end this book takes you on a journey into the terrifying world where we are not alone. I believe this would make a great film due to the fact that Apocalypse movies are extremely popular, and there is a thick attention grabbing plot that sucks you into the story. Ender must be played by multiple actors due to his progression of age, but his movie character should played by someone who can shine with confidence and decisiveness. His older brother should be played by a character that is villainous and cruel in nature. Their persona should resemble the villains played by Jack Nicholson and Al Pacino in their earlier films. For this movie to come together I believe there would be no better director than Micheal Bay, who directed “Armageddon”. Bay would make the perfect director for this movie to become a visual masterpiece, since he has mastered the dark space movies with impending doom.
The next book that should definitely be made into a movie is From the Dust Returned by Ray Bradbury. This novel is about a group of spirits occupying an empty haunted house. This house is full of these entities with supernatural powers that only Bradbury could imagine. The house seems like a “normal” haunted house until the introduction of an abandoned baby (Timothy) left on the doorstep. Tim would live his life growing up in the care of these strange creatures while he learns about them and their world, as he tries to cope with being the only human in the house. This would make a very interesting and unique movie because of the multiple stories that all coincide. With these multiple stories the director would be free to change the setting frequently and keep the watcher on the edge of their seat. I believe Tim Burton would be the perfect director for this movie since he frequently makes dark movies with children as the main character. The character of Tim would need to be filled by boy who can act timid, yet intelligent while figuring out his strange world.
The last of the science fiction books that should be made into a film is The Martian Chronicles. This books explores four expeditions to the planet Mars which is full of life. Due to the extreme differences between the Martians and Humans it seems almost impossible for them to live peacefully together for any period of time. After a series of strange events with these telepathic creatures it seems as if humans are inferior to Martian technology and will never be able to live with Martians, or on Mars at all. Later expeditions and downfalls such as chicken pox weaken the Martian rule and eventually humans can colonize Mars. Once colonized the fight is not over with human struggles such as atomic war, and the cessation of shuttles to Mars where a family is stranded. This book would make a perfect movie because of its ever-changing adventure style, and would definitely keep viewers on the edge of their seats. The most important characters to cast would definitely be Nathaniel York, who leads the first expedition, and the “crazy archaeologist” who enters in on the third expedition. York should ideally be played by a strong outgoing role who has played in actions movies, such as Bruce Willis. The archaeologist should be played by someone who can take the role of going crazy over the top. My best pick for this role would be someone who has strong facial expressions, and is not afraid to be “in your face” such as Jim Carrey. Again I would recommend that Micheal Bay direct this film, as he can give space that dark scary feeling that the movie would desperately need.
There are many books to choose from that absolutely should have been movies, and there are never enough that make it. With these books there is a great adventure feeling, with a strong message that would be perfect for any movie. Although there is little chance, hopefully these three books can be turned into the big screen before they are lost in time.
