I know that just about everyone and their mother thinks that some book should be a movie no doubt about it. There is also no doubt about the fact that often as we read our favorite books we think about who we think would fit this character and the like. I for one am guilty of just that practice; often as I finish the last page of a great book the credits begin rolling and a veritable cast of Hollywood royalty scrolls through my mind. There are three books in particular that as of late have caught my fancy. I believe, that with the right cast, these books could make for phenomenal movies.
The first book that I think would do justice to the big screen is Til We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis. I think that the movie industry proved that pretty much any C.S. Lewis plot can hold its own in Hollywood against any of the vapid plot lines that have begun to litter the movie industry. This book is both moving and engrossing. I would most like to see Joe Wright (The Notebook) direct this movie because he captured the simplistic romanticism of The Notebook so well without making it cliché and far from the plot. I also think that the pull of Psyche to her sisters and her husband as well as Orul’s inner struggle would be masterfully shown through his directing style. Casting is hard for a novel like this. Mainstream actresses wouldn’t be choice for this work but for Psyche’s character I think that an actress like Amanda Seyfried would be good because she hasn’t quite broken into her own but she is still a good actress. For Orul it wouldn’t be so much focused on looks but more on impact and ability.
Another book to movie transition that I would like to see is The Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine. This movie has been in talks forever and I still haven’t seen any progress. I really think that for a movie adaptation of this young adult book you would need younger actresses like Emma Roberts, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, or basically any of the other up and coming actresses. I really think that for the character Addie you would need to make sure that an actress with a bit of experience behind her was chosen in which case Emma Roberts would work nicely. For her sister Meryl it would be a bit tougher to cast because of course you get caught up in the initial physical description which says she has to be pale and blonde. I really think that an actress like Bridgit Mendler would be a good candidate. I don’t usually spend that much time focusing on secondary characters so the only other character I’ve really given any thought to is Rhys and for his character I think that someone that is both serious and whimsical would work nicely. I really think that Eric Brevig (Journey to the Center of the Earth) would be able to capture the comedy, action, and fantasy of the plot.
The last book that I’ve really been hoping for a movie adaptation of is Suffer the Children by John Saul. I for one find it incredibly unfair that there have been a million books in the horror/suspense genre that have been made into movies and a John Saul book has yet to be adapted. I think that an actress like Kate Winslet would be perfect for Rose Conger in that she has the ability to go from simpering damsel to butt kicking heroine at a moment’s notice. I think that someone like Ralph Feinnes should play Jack Conger because he has a way of playing someone completely insane yet completely lucid at the same time. I haven’t given much thought to Beth because she is more of a difficult character to choose because she is young. I think that any director in the horror/suspense genre would work for this but in particular I like Rupert Wainwright would be perfect because he has a way of showing both the average side of the story as in the everyday lives that Saul follows as well as the horror aspect and the gory murders.
