Have you ever read a book and wondered what it would be like if it were made into a movie? Some books read like the author dreamt it all up in movie form. While books tend to be always be better than the movies made from them, it is still nice to see your favorite stories and characters brought to life on screen. Here are three of my favorite books that I think would make great movies.
E.E. Knight’s Vampire Earth Series
The vampires in E.E. Knight’s Vampire Earth series of books don’t sparkle, nor do they take their shirts off at every opportunity. Instead, they are aliens who use mental control to take over the planet and the heroes of these books are leading a human resistance movement to take the planet back. The setting is post-apocalyptic in a way that reminds me of old westerns.
This series is made up of eight books with a ninth one on the way, so it could easily be made into a bunch of movies or even a long-running series. Given all the violence and gore, it might best be suited for a network like HBO or Showtime. A movie, or series of movies, made from these books would be like a cross between Red Dawn and the TV series called V. It would be action-packed, have lots of great effects and scares, plus a solid story about population control and people willing to fight to the death to preserve freedom. The vampire aliens are really cool, too.
Stephen King’s Eyes of the Dragon
Eyes of the Dragon is perhaps the most atypical of Stephen King’s many books and short stories. This novel is more fantasy than horror, and it features kings fighting dragons, evil wizards, and so on. What makes this such a fascinating book is the way it plays out like a political conspiracy and the ingenious methods used by the heroes to take on the villain.
Another good reason for this needing to be made into a movie is how it ties into King’s Dark Tower series of books. If the Dark Tower stuff ever got made into a TV series or something similar, then this book would help serve as a prequel of sorts. I consider this to be my favorite Stephen King book and recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy novels, even if you don’t like Stephen King.
Carl Hiaasen’s Skinny Dip
I think this book would be a perfect starring vehicle for Sandra Bullock and Kevin Costner. It’s about a woman whose husband tries to kill her by throwing her overboard a cruise ship. The title of the book comes from the woman’s dress getting knocked off when she falls in the water. She manages to survive by floating on a bale of marijuana, and winds up on a beach outside the home of a retired detective. Rather than immediately go to authorities, she and the detective decide to spend a few days screwing with her husband and trying to figure out why he wanted her dead.
Skinny Dip is filled with colorful characters like rednecks in Florida swamps, sleazy business dealings, and much more. I’ve recommended the book to several people and they all loved it, and I think it would make a really great movie. Jimmy Buffet could do the soundtrack.
