Whether it’s baseball season or not, there’s no doubt that baseball is America’s sport and movies about the baseball abound. For this collection, I went for something a little different – baseball movies with a twist. Some have murder at their core while others are malevolent and creepy. If you’re a baseball lover, a creepy movie lover or both, these baseball movies will knock you out of the park.
Listed Alphabetically for Convenience
Ball of Wax (2003) – Brett Packard has it all- looks, fame, fortune and a sizzling baseball career – but he’s bored. When a fight on the ball field results in a stabbing, Packard uses the event to create a new game, one where he uses his powers of persuasion to manipulate his teammates into ever more detrimental behavior. Teammate against teammate, the team soon faces ruination until his teammates decide they’ve had enough. 90 mins
Battlefield Baseball (2003) – This one is Japanese and is so outrageous I just had to include it. In this version of the game, a team only wins when every member of the opposition is dead. The Seido High team is set to face the Gedo High team on opening day. The problem is the Gedo’s are blue-faced zombies who impale, maim and decimate their opposition. The Seido team tries to pull their retired ace pitcher out of retirement but he wants no part of it. How will they face the opposition? 87 mins
The Catcher (2006) – Davey Walker, the catcher, finds out his contract isn’t being renewed and takes it personally. Very personally. What follows is the brutal and often gory mutilation of those of his teammates who are still at the park after the game has ended. 77 mins
The Fan (1996) -As the name suggests, this movie has a stalker at the heart of the plot. Wesley Snipes is Bobby Rayburn, a star player recently traded to the San Francisco Giants. Robert DeNiro is Gil Renard, a fan obsessed with the team and its new player. Renard blames another teammate for Rayburn’s slump and “helps” Rayburn. When the gesture is not appreciated properly by Rayburn, Renard kidnaps Rayburn’s son. Now he must play the best game of his life or his son will suffer the consequences. 116 mins
Night Game (1989) – When the Astros play a night game, a serial killer takes another victim. Roy Scheider is the detective who puts the pieces together every time a woman is murdered following a night game. 95 mins
While none of these is Oscar-winning material, they are entertaining and a little off the beaten path.
