My family has a long history of servicemen. My grandfather was in World War I. My father and uncles were in World War II and Korea. My brother and many others toured Vietnam. With that history, my family has been very involved in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in our area. My mother, sisters, aunts, cousins and myself are all part of the VFW Ladies Axillary. We are constantly striving to support our veterans and our troops that are still deployed. We have many fund raiser’s and raise money to pay for programs that help our veterans with family crisis, medical costs and other vital things.
Many people ask me how they can be involved in the support of our Troops that are deployed. I find that people do want to show their support and would like the opportunity to do so but don’t know where to start or are afraid that the program is not legitimate.
I have put together the Top 5 things that you can do for our Troops. I hope you find this useful and show your support. Please share with family and friends. If you have any questions or would like more information on the VFW in your area, please visit http://www.vfw.org/ There are many other things that you can do for our Servicemen who have already served for our country as well.
This is an excellent program. This allows our Troops to make free phone calls home. This is so important for our serving men and women who are deployed to a foreign country. By visiting this website, you can help support and allow our soldiers to call home and talk to their spouses and children and really boost their moral. This is my personal favorite. Just to hear a familiar voice of a loved one can be a wonderful gift to our soldiers that are so far from home.
Ever want to tell a soldier your were proud of them or give them some words of wisdom or just let them know that you care? Well here is your opportunity. From this site, you print out a form. Write what you would like the soldiers to know from your heart and send back to Flags Across The Nation address listed. They will send these to Our Troops for you. This is also an excellent way for a community or school to get involved and send many letters at the same time. Brighten up a soldiers day with a few words of courage, wisdom and love. Your support is important to the men and women serving and hearing it directly from you is heartwarming.
Adopt a service member that is deployed and serving overseas. As a member of this project, you are required to write to your adopted soldier at least once per month. You can also send care packages and items from home. This is an excellent program and is a great way to stay connected and involved. You will create a long lasting friendship and bond over time with soldier and your family is welcome to write and get involved as well. I give this one a big thumbs up.
This is an excellent project and one of my favorites as well. By sponsoring a soldier, you agree to send them one Hero Box per month. They provide you with all of the information you will need to put your care package together. They also have options to get your community or church involved and sending several Hero Boxes out at once. This is an excellent way for family and friends to get involved. Sponsor a soldier today and brighten their days and bring a smile to their face. They so appreciate and miss the little comforts of home.
I personally love this organization. This program allows our soldiers to keep in touch with their children through greeting cards. You purchase and put together a kit, and pass it along. This gives the child everything they need to continually keep in contact with their overseas parent. It includes postage, the cards, etc. Please visit this site and help keep our military families connected.
God Bless America and Support Our Troops
