It is that time of the year yet again. Certain students will be waving high school goodbye and saying hello to their first semester in college as well as a new set of school supplies. Rather than the typical fare found when gearing up for high school, college back to school essentials differ somewhat. Usually, they are a bit pricier, but, are very much so needed.
These are the top ten, a survival kit you could say, for incoming freshmen. There are in no particular order, as all of them are essential back to school supplies.
This will be a lifesaver come in the near future. With technology these days, most professors will now post key information online for you to view or might need to print out. Rather than constantly relying on the library computer, it’s best to get a personal laptop and just tote it around campus. It will also be easier to take notes in class if you’re not a fast writer, too. Apple offers student discounts on their laptops and other brands, such as Acer, have reasonable prices.
They aren’t as popular in high school; however, they will be your best friend in college. College textbooks aren’t as simplistic as high school textbooks and actually require some reading and researching for important information for a certain class. So, once you do find that information, you must highlight it or at least mark it in some way. This will help you remember as well as highlight where exactly the piece of info is. Do not underestimate the highlighter.
It would be very keen to invest in a graphing or scientific calculator, especially if you have a lot of math classes ahead of you. These types of calculators can typically be found in your local Target or Wal-Mart and their prices are usually reasonable, especially with the added bonus of a back to school sale.
To compliment your new laptop, it would be good to get a printer. You are going to be writing a lot of term papers, essays, opinion pieces and everything in-between! Just like anything else on this back to school list, a printer is very essential–especially if you need to print off plane tickets for when you go home.
5. Organizational Supplies
Being disorganized in college can make or break your grade and overall experience. Being organized and on top with all of your classes is much needed, as a lot of content is going to be thrown at you. Folders, binders, sticky notes, notebooks and so forth will be quite beneficial.
6. Basic to School Supplies
Though this should be a given, there are some extra office-like supplies that many students overlook. Of course you’ll need pens, pencils, paper and whatnot, however, a stapler and staples will also be essential for back to school. Nothing is more annoying than trying to hunt down a stapler in class to staple together your final paper and the professor doesn’t have one, so you can only hope someone has a portable stapler that you can borrow. Don’t be this person!
7. Voice Recorder
Recording a teacher’s lecture while taking notes can make studying simpler. The nice thing about voice recorders is that they are now pretty cheap and can record a few hours worth of talking. These can be found at Radio Shack, Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart–pretty much, all those major stores.
8. MP3 Player or Portable Gaming Device
Whether it is an iPod, PSP or Nintendo DS, these little handheld electronics can make a boring wait time between classes–or waiting for a teacher–fly by. Also, some music in your ear while walking around campus can help you get pumped up for a class you are not particularly happy about.
Another much overlooked item, the backpack (satchel, messenger bag, whatever), will save you and your notes from the elements (i.e., rain) and just make carrying around your books and stuff easier. Don’t think you’ll look lame or goofy, just be practical.
Soda, coffee, energy drinks…Whatever gets you going, these will be pretty essential for the back to school supply list. Doubly so for very early morning classes when you are not a morning person.
These are only the supplies for back to school, dorm essentials are quite different. However, one word that should be known for any college student moving into a dorm is IKEA. Although, Target has good college essential sales going on right now, but, IKEA is the place to go for cheap but reliable furniture.
