If you’re a movie lover, you can’t help but quote a line from a movie in everyday conversation. Facebook users even use them on their profile when they have nothing else to say about their personal life. But there are a select few that will continue to place their mark in movie history.
10. “You can’t handle the truth” – A Few Good Men
Only Jack Nicholson could be the actor to deliver this phrase with astounding force and intent. Not the brother or husband you know who thinks they can do it just as well. It is a conversation between Col. Nathan R. Jessep (Jack Nicholson and Lt. Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise) that we will never forget.
9. “I’m the king of the world!” – Titanic
Come on. Don’t tell me you are not one of those people that went on a cruise and weren’t tempted to go to the bow of the ship and scream out this phrase with arms wide open! Who wouldn’t? The phrase has also taken a different turn in the TV show Bones, where Hodgins always find’s himself as “King of the lab.” Come on scientists…fess up!
8. “Here’s looking at you kid” – Casablanca
It is a classic that probably many of the younger generation have never heard of, but Bogart utters those famous words with so much class. And how could you forget “We’ll always have Paris” and “Here’s looking at you, kid.” These lines never get old so let’s keep this classic alive.
7. “Yeah, Baby” – Austin Powers
The shaggadelic phrases. The name of this not so debonaire British secret agent. And that catchy soul bossanova starts playing in your head. The phrases in the movie are like a magnet for any in the male species. Mike Meyers has created a character and dialogue that unfortunately will be stuck in our heads for a very long time.
6. “As if” – Clueless
It’s bad enough we have to keep up with the slang and texting lingo of kids today, but little blond girls of 1995 were probably driving their parents crazy by including this with all that attitude. Now if we could only get “whatever” out of our life!
5. “Run Forrest, run” – Forrest Gump
If you run, you must have heard someone say this to you. Said to a young Forrest by Jenny as he runs away from bullies, Forrest runs with all his might eventually losing the braces on his legs. The phrase has even inspired a once popular club song by Crank Squad, with it’s own catchy running dance!
4. “Say hello to my little friend” – Scarface
I don’t think I have ever heard a female utter the words, but every male I know who has held a piece of cold steel in their hands cannot help themselves utter this phrase. Simon Pheonix (Wesley Snipes) even says it to John Sparton (Sylvester Stallone) in Demolition Man. Trigger happy gangsters everywhere have idolized Al Pacino ever since he pointed his M16A1 and shouts “Okay, you wanna play rough?…” and you know the rest.
3. “Alrighty then” – Ace Ventura
Jim Carrey is in a class all by himself. You either love him or hate him. But when he took the slang phrase to unusual dimensions (chanting it while impersonating a monk in Ace Venture 2), comical characters of the world couldn’t stop using it. Need I say more?….alrighty then.
2. “May the force be with you” – Star Wars
If you hang out with the “Sci-Fi” geeks like I do, this phrase is inevitable in conversation, blogging and texting. A saga that continues to be passed on from generation to generation, young and old are familiar with the phrase uttered by Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, et al. I’m pretty sure George Lucas might have it copyrighted like he does everything else, so be cautious how you use it.
1. “I’ll be back” – The Terminator
Even though Arnold is not the “Governator,” he left his mark on pop culture with the number one phrase on almost everyone’s list. The trend has continued in the rest of the trilogy, the prequel and even the TV series. “I’ll be back” is no longer spoken in a normal tone by anyone who has seen the movie, but nobody does it like Arnold in with that thick Austrian accent.
