College freshmen are entering a world unknown to them. You will be living on your own or with a roommate (you’ve never met previously) in the dorms. Make sure you have the top essentials to make the transition as painless as possible.
10th Must-Have Dorm Room School Supply for College Freshmen: Mini Refrigerator
A mini refrigerator can be bought at Lowe’s, Home Depot, or Walmart.com. A mini refrigerator is convenient to have during late night study snack sessions or to store leftovers from the cafeteria. Waste not want not.
9th Item Freshmen College Students Should Have In the Dorm: Desktop Reading Lamp
A desktop reading lamp can be purchased from K-Mart, Wal-Mart, or online. A reading lamp will save college freshmen from burning the room light. Plus, the lighting in the dorm room might be too dim. Another good reason to have a desktop reading lamp is to keep from burning the room light while your roommate is trying to sleep.
8th Must-Have Dorm Room School Supply for College Freshmen: Stapler
Yes, I know it is a small and simple item, but when you don’t have one and can’t find one you’ll wish you bought one. During my first year in college, I had a smart-aleck economics teacher. We had to turn in assignments every other week. On one occasion, my assignment was three pages long. When I went up front to give her my assignment I nicely asked, “Where’s your stapler?” She told me she didn’t have one. I admit that I looked at her strangely because I never heard of a teacher not having a stapler in class. In high school, the teachers always had staplers on their desk. I was surprised that’s all, but she took the opportunity to say, “Why don’t you have one?” Buy a stapler so your professor won’t have an excuse to give you a hard time. On a personal note, she wasn’t that great of a professor. She spent more time talking about her personal life and other subjects that didn’t have a thing to do with Economics.
7th Item a Freshman College Student Should Have In the Dorm: Magnetic Combo Board
A magnetic combo board is half of a dry erase magnetic message board and half a cork board. Use this item to write date reminders to yourself or post flyers to college study groups you want to attend. Hang this board over your desk. This item can be bought from organize.com
6th Item a Freshman College Student Should Have In the Dorm: Shower Slippers
There’s nothing worse than catching a foot fungus. If you have to share a bathroom with the whole floor, then get a pair of shower slippers and wear them while your taking a shower. Good shower slippers have a soft nylon mesh that stretch to fit your feet. Also, good shower slippers have non-skid soles to prevent slipping. You don’t know what kind of grooming habits or germs your “bathroom friends” may have so get them. Don’t be caught with a foot fungus, athlete’s foot, or an extra toe.
5th Must-Have Dorm Room School Supplies for College Freshmen: Laundry Bags and Baskets
Laundry bags are great to carry your dirty clothes in. However, laundry baskets are best when transferring laundry from the washer to the dryer. Plus, laundry baskets are better to put clean folded laundry in. Split the difference and get both. Use the bag to store and carry dirty clothes and use the basket to haul clean clothes. If you don’t know how to do laundry, get your mom to teach you before you leave.
4th Item a Freshman College Student Should Have In the Dorm: ATM/Debit Card
Don’t and I repeat, don’t keep large amounts of cash in your room. Cash is the most commonly stolen item from college dorm rooms. Your roommate or his/her friends might have sticky fingers. Perhaps you make a new friend and invite him/her to your room. You are hanging out until you have to go to the bathroom. If he or she is a thief, they will be riffling through your stuff before you get two steps down the hall. Get an ATM/Debit card and don’t write the pin number on the back. If you can’t remember the pin number keep it in a safe location or store it in your cell phone as a phone code to call your parents or a friend. If the card is stolen, you can report it and the bank can track it. Plus, the bank will issue you a card with a new number. You can’t track cash and it is not replaceable.
3rd Item a Freshman College Student Should Have In the Dorm: Sentry Fireproof Safe
Keep that ATM/Debit card in a fireproof safe. While you’re at it, keep your iPod, jewelry, and papers with personal information (items that can be used for identity theft) in it as well.
Small capacity Sentry fireproof safes are best for dorm rooms. They don’t take up a lot of room, has a handle for easy travel, and have a key entry. Keep the key on a key ring that you always carry and tape the spare key under your dorm desk or computer chair. It’s best to have a key safe so you won’t have to remember a combination code. Make sure the safe is fireproof just in case there is a fire in the building. If the place goes into a raging blaze your valuables are not destroyed.
2nd Must-Have Dorm Room School Supply for College Freshmen: USB Flash Drive
A USB Flash Drive is essential to backing up your hard drive in case of a crash. They are also useful to store your term papers and other college homework. Saving your “works in progress” on a flash drive will make things convenient if you decide that you need to do some work in the library, computer lab, etc. Buy two flash drives. One flash drive can be used to back up your computer hard drive (make sure the flash drive has enough GBs). The other flash drive can be used for homework, term papers, or group projects.
The Top Must-Have Dorm Room School Supplies for College Freshmen: Laptop/Desk Computer and Printer
Some students wonder why they need a computer and printer in their room when the campus has dozens of computer labs. However, when you have a term paper due in two days and you only have a rough draft you will be thankful you have it. During term paper time computer labs and library computers will occupied by other students fighting the same deadline as you. Don’t waste you time roaming all over campus to find a place to type and print your term paper. A computer and printer are the top must-have college items for your dorm room.
