Check out some of the best upcoming movies of August 2010 to help you get over the summer’s end. From a movie about a baster and a buddy cop flick to dragons and flesh-eating fish, there’s sure to be something for everyone on this list of the best upcoming movies of August 2010:
Best Upcoming Movies of August 2010: August 6th Release Date
The Other Guys – When it comes to guy-friendly comedies, this looks like your best bet out of the upcoming movies of August 2010. It’s the “other” cop comedy of 2010, following Kevin Smith’s less-than-impressive ‘Cop Out’ (see: strikingly similar movies of 2010). So will Will Farrell and Mark Wahlberg fare better as a duo of mismatched cops trying to play with the big boys? Here’s to hoping that the guy whose got Will Farrell to give us one of his better movies, ‘Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burundy’, can get him to bring it again in one of the only upcoming comedy movies of August 2010 (I just hope it’s ultimately rated R).
Flipped – Rob Reiner directs one of the best upcoming movies of August 2010 for tweens and teens (and parents who fear that vampire love stories aren’t the best kind for their middle schoolers). This sounds like a cute coming-of-age story about two kids whose feelings for each other are “flipped”. Poor Juli has been in love with Bryce’s baby blues since second grade, but he just think the fan of chickens and trees is weird. However, as the two get older, Juli starts to see that there just might not be anything to like behind those blue eyes, and Bryce starts to find Juli’s uniqueness intriguing. I have a feeling this is definitely going to be one of the best upcoming movies of August 2010 as a refreshing break from all the teen movies today that seem to have to be filled with sex and the supernatural.
Best Upcoming Movies of August 2010: August 13th Release Date
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World – When it comes to the best upcoming movies of August 2010 getting the most buzz, this one by the director of ‘Shaun of the Dead’ and ‘Hot Fuzz’ looks like it’s going to be big. And if you don’t believe me, check out 7 reasons to love the trailer alone here. Perhaps the movie takes a page from the guide on how to make a Michael Cera movie from the web, but with pixilated 1-UPs, cute animated doodles, and, of course, the seven evil exes Scott Pilgrim must defeat to win his ladylove, at least it’s a colorful comic book page. And it looks like we could see a whole knew dimension of the actor as the Sex Bob-omb bassist/battle-ready boyfriend really kicks ass in one of the hottest upcoming movies of August 2010 that will definitely bring it on like Donkey Kong.
Eat Pray Love – Here’s one of the upcoming movies of August 2010 aiming to please the ladies (and maybe earn Julia Roberts an Oscar nod). It’s going to have a built-in fanbase, thanks to the popularity of the book it’s based on, and the “based on a true story” tale about a woman leaving her life behind to find herself on a round-the-world journey might attract the ‘Sex and the City’ crowd as well as women that are not as into fashion and staying svelte and more into food and giving into guilty pleasures (besides shoes and sex). Just be forewarned: this is one of the best upcoming movies of August 2010 that has “chick flick” written all over it, despite the book’s incredibly steamy sex scenes (ladies might also want to watch for guilty pleasures James Franco and Javier Bardem).
The Expendables – This is one of the best upcoming movies of August 2010 with one of the worst titles, considering who’s starring in it. With “old guys” Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, and the Governator making appearances in the film, it’s hard not to think that the title refers to the way Hollywood looks at older actors. However, it actually might as well be titled ‘Rambo + 5’; the movie is about a group of mercernaries hired to overthrow a dictator in a South American country where the “band of brothers” encounter deceit, betrayal, and bullets aplenty. Let’s just hope these guys prove that they aren’t expendable when of the best upcoming action movies of August 2010 spills buckets of blood and bullets on the silver screen.
Tales From Earthsea – I was rather disappointed with master filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s latest animated movie, so it will be interesting to see if he’s passed the torch on to his son, Goro Miyazaki, with his first animated feature. With no upcoming animated movies set for wide release in August 2010, this limited release film might be your best bet. It’s based on the novel ‘A Wizard of Earthsea’ and transports the viewer to a world inhabited by sorcerers, dragons, and, of course, evil. It doesn’t sound as imaginative as his father’s best movies, but I still think it’s one of the best upcoming movies of August 2010 to check out if you get the chance.
Best Upcoming Movies of August 2010: August 20th Release Date
Piranha 3-D – Well, I guess Richard Dreyfuss being a part of the cast makes one of the only upcoming horror movies of August 2010 worth seeing, if just to see how he is used in the remake of the movie that once spawned a sequel that jump-started James Cameron’s career. I would love to see this movie turn out campy and fun, with just the right amount of scary stuff (think ‘Scream’). At least it is one of the best upcoming movies of August 2010 to end the summer to, as flesh-eating prehistoric fish make one last swim not seem like the best of ideas.
Lottery Ticket – Can Bow Wow prove that he’s got bite at the box office? Here he plays a lucky young man living in the projects who has to protect his winning lottery ticket from opportunistic neighbors for three days. Sure the plot doesn’t sound like much, but if it’s executed right, this could be one of the best upcoming comedy movies of August 2010. Plus, can ‘Ice Cube’ unfreeze his career here? This PG-13 flick may not be ‘Friday’, but taking a chance on a ‘Lottery Ticket’ can reap big rewards.
The Switch – Will Jennifer Aniston get a little dark for this comedy about artificial insemination? I preferred the title ‘The Baster’ better for one of the wackiest upcoming movies of August 2010, as Aniston stars as a woman who uses a turkey baster to get pregnant. Unfortunately, her supremo semen sample is replaced by her neurotic best friend with his own for some moronic reason. So have the guys that brought us ‘Blades of Glory’ conceived the perfect end-of-summer comedy? It may end up being terrible, but it’s one of the best upcoming movies of August 2010 for checking out just to see how the silly storyline plays out (and to see Aniston as a mom!).
Best Upcoming Movies of August 2010: August 27th Release Date
Going the Distance – If you enjoy rom-coms and have fallen prey to the text and Skype-fueled long distance relationship of today, then this might be one of the best upcoming movies of August 2010 for you. Drew Barrymore and real-life on-again off-again leading man Justin Long play a couple doing all they can to make their long-distance relationship work. When it comes to romantic comedies, this really is your best bet for August (let’s just hope it’s better than what we’ve seen so far this year).
So whether you want to use a little action, romance, or humor to help you get over the summer’s end, there’s sure to be something to help on this list of the upcoming movies of August 2010.
