Getting your kitchen remodeled is exciting, but if you have to live in your home while the construction is being done, you might find everyday life a little more difficult than you had planned. The kitchen is a central point in your home that you need for eating, cooking, cleaning and many other things. When the kitchen is disabled, you will be as well.
Tips on how to live in your home while the kitchen is being remodeled:
The Refrigerator- Obviously, if you want to have food in the house, you will need a way to keep perishables cold. When you are undergoing kitchen remodeling, the power may have to be turned off at times. That means your refrigerator isn’t doing you any good unless you eat the food immediately. To get around not having a refrigerator on a constant basis, try using a cooler to store food in. It will still be limited as to how long you can keep the food fresh enough, but it will be better than having the food get warm and then cold again.
The Sink- You don’t realize how much you use your kitchen sink until you don’t have it to use. When the kitchen is under construction, you will likely have very limited use of the sink. This is the easiest problem to fix. You can use the bathtub or bathroom sink to do certain tasks. You can also use paper plates and plastic utensils so that you don’t have to worry about washing dishes.
Cooking- Cooking meals might be the hardest of the problems yet when you are trying to live in your home while the kitchen is being remodeled. There are several ways that you can work around this issue. You can cook outside on the grill if weather is permitting. This is a great way to have a picnic. Grilled food is the best food when you can get it and this is the perfect time to get good use from your grill. You can start using the microwave more often as well. Toaster ovens work well for smaller items or you can purchase a larger toaster oven to suit your needs.
Dust- Where there is construction, there is dust and a lot of it. The best way to live in your house while your kitchen is under construction and to avoid the dust caused by it is to place a block between the kitchen and the other rooms in the house. You can do this by placing blankets or sheets between the doorways to prevent the dust from entering other areas of the home. You can’t avoid the dust that will cover the kitchen, but the rest of your house doesn’t have to be subject to the dirt particles.
It is an inconvenience to have to work around construction in your home. That is the price of remodeling the kitchen though. Most people can’t afford to rent a room for the duration of remodeling efforts so they have to learn to live with it until it is done. The good news is, most decent construction companies will work with you to get things done in an order that allows you to get back to being able to use the kitchen. Until then, follow the tips above to help you get through.
